5.0 out of 5 stars Orbit is back in style! Finally..., 27 Feb 2006
Upon seeing William Orbit had a new album out i became very exited.
Being a fan of his original strange cargo series i hoped this album would go back to these routes.
I am glad to say that it has slightly gone back and there are some great Orbit sounding tracks here. However there are some racks with vocals which dont sound bad, however dont have the same style and feel as his non-vocal work. I think he should stick to just using vocals like in Strange cargo, i.e to tell short stories or for album depth.

Overall the album is much lighter than his previous work which had some dark themes within them. I hope if he makes another album he will make it darker with a bit more thought on vocals and how to use them.

If you are an Orbit fan however, buy this now! You will not be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, even WITH the vocals, 22 Feb 2006
I'm not too sure why some people have a problem with Orbit using vocals in some of these songs on the album. Spiral is a fantastic example of Orbit's sheer talent in song writing; a hyponotic and beautiful song with really cleverly selected vocals (mainly Mutya; Her voice suits the atmosphere and style so well.) Most of the tracks are lovely, well produced tracks which you cannot just dismiss as good background music. Highlights include "Sea Green" and "Surfin'" both acousticy electronica chill out songs. I only hope that next time Orbit releases another album (which I gather is again sometime this year, i think in the early summer) he includes more vocals so he can show off his massive talent in song writing which he so gloriously presented with Madonna on her "Ray of Light" album and in Spiral. Great!

2.0 out of 5 stars A "nice" CD., 7 Jul 2006
Many of the tracks here are from ideas and productions that never made it to CD before. Perhaps backing "ideas" for Madonna, All Saints etc developed into finished tracks. Perhaps older noodles of his own that were never taken further until now.

Orbit is a talented man - and highly creative, but what we have here is some of his craft without the passion found elsewhere. The Strange Cargo series was inspiring while this just sounds, well, "nice". If it were someone unknown I'd congratulate on the slick production and watch their development with great interest. But Orbit can do much better than this.

I can't help feeling it was released to keep his name in the public's mind - or perhaps a suggestion from the record company, to trade on his reputation and fame. I can't see he would need the money. I'm sure he knows this is far from his best work (and to be fair it ain't his worst).

From past work he has set very high standards for himself. I expect a new solo album from WO to be a cut above the rest, to show others how its done, to have elements of daring, experimentation, even self indulgence. I hear little of that here.

Come on Orbit, you've proved your worth, now exercise your art, challenge and battle with yourself like you would have done before the fame and fortune.

Hopefully this is just to fill time while he rests, re-charges and works out his next evolutionary step.

In summary, a lazy effort, could do better. See me after class!
(I still love you though Mr Orbit)

4.0 out of 5 stars Not classic Orbit - but has its moments (several)
