Book Description

26 Sep 2013

Welcome to Hello and Goodbye: two dark tales from two deceased narrators - bottled-lightning treats that will make you gasp, gurn, shiver and squirm.

HELLO MR BONES: two damaged souls have, thanks to each other's love, turned their lives around. But as London's weather takes a turn for the worse, so do their fates, when raw evil runs riot the night of the impossible hurricane.

GOODBYE MR RAT: an IRA bomber watches over his ex-lover as she takes his ashes back to his rural hometown. This girl from northern Indiana may not be ready for rural Ireland, yet the townsfolk of Iron Valley certainly have plans for her...

Stark, blackly humorous and compressed to the point of detonation; McCabe writes like M. R. James took a dread wrong turning on an Irish country road.

From the Inside Flap

Welcome to Hello and Goodbye: two dark tales from two deceased narrators - bottled-lightning treats that will make you gasp, gurn, shiver and squirm. Please read on for Hello Mr Bones, in which an evil puppet master and his flotilla of fiends reacquaint two reformed souls with the demons they thought they had defeated.

This is Hello and Goodbye : two glitzy baubles - generously stuffed with the choicest, rustiest nails, lacquered with dread, and compressed to the point of detonation. Stay on this side for Goodbye Mr Rat, in which a girl from northern Indiana travels to rural Ireland; where, as she bids a friend farewell, she meets malign misfortune.

Advertised as 'two Halloween horrors', these two novellas have in common that the narrators are dead and are profoundly sympathetic depictions of the consequences of severe psychological derangement. 'Hello Mr Bones' concerns a boy, Valentine Shannon, who is befriended by Balthazar Bowen, who may or may not have a sensible, cruel twin, both members of the landed gentry. Valentine reports Balthazar to the police for 'interfering' with him causing him to drive his Trojan into a lake and drown. Shannon later becomes a Christian Brother who is dismissed in disgrace for assaulting a pupil in the 'Martin Boan Affair'. He takes up another teaching post meeting Chris Jones, a feminist who had a child in 1975, Faisal, after a short relationship. Faisal has learning difficulties. A horrific crime involving a child with Down's syndrome in Florida perpetrated by a clown, Bonio, is repeatedly mentioned. Valentine receives a disturbing phone call from the dead 'Mr Bones' who in flashbacks to Ireland seems to know Chris and have designs on her son. The denouement comes during the storm of 1987, (the Michael Fish 'nothing-to-concern yourself-with gale'), where Valentine is on the receiving end of Mr Bones's demonic forces. The narrative is maniacal and unnerving.

'Goodbye Mr Rat' is narrated by the ashes of the cremated Gabriel King residing in 'a polished copper urn' after dying from cancer. He is being returned to his hometown, Iron Valley, on the Irish borders by his girlfriend Beni Benikin, an American from Indiana. She has been impressed that as a Republican operative or terrorist, he had been involved with the 1981 hunger strike in the Maze prison. A repeated event is the killing of 7 protestants in Altnavogue, including a 6 month old baby.
