Book Description

1 Sep 2009
Witty, one-of-a-kind imaginative cupcake designs using candy and sweets from the local store. Karen Tack and Alan Richardson show how to create funny, scary, and sophisticated masterpieces, using common sweets and snack items. With these easy-to-follow techniques, even the most kitchen-challenged cooks can: raise a big-top circus cupcake tier for a child s birthday; trot out a line of confectionery pupcakes for a dog fancier; serve sausage and pepperoni pizza cupcakes for April Fool's Day; bewitch trick-or-treaters with chilly ghost chocolate cupcakes; make a white cupcake Christmas wreath and Easter egg cupcakes No baking skills or fancy pastry equipment is required. Spotting the familiar items in the hundreds of brilliant photos is at least half the fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing & few "recipes" 10 July 2009
By Mel
Format:Paperback
Given all the positive reviews for this book, I decided to purchase it as cupcakes have become a new passion. The photograph on the front particularly drew me in. But I have to say that I was generally very disappointed with this book. There are lots of cupcake decorating ideas - the dogs on the front being the best in my view - but many of the decorating ideas were more arty than edible. Some of the cupcakes are designed to look like savoury food, and I just didn't find that particularly inspiring to make. I was also incredibly disappointed that there were no recipes in the book for cupcakes!! The recipes included involved packet cake mixes! To me, this is sacrilege for a cookbook (or at least what I thought was a cookbook). The recipes are just a couple of pages at the back. Whilst there are a few interesting techniques, you would probably learn more by doing a search of YouTube and looking there. Overall I feel this book was a waste of money, and I have to say that I am obsessed with cookbooks and can honestly say that this is the only cookbook that I own that I feel was a mistake! If you're after something with a range of both cake and frosting recipes, along with beginner and more advanced decoration techniques, I'd highly recommend the Australian Women's Weekly Cupcakes and Fairycakes book. Much more useful - and cheaper too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cupcake-tastic 6 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
To me, this book is designed to give you ideas for things like birthday or Christmas cakes, rather than a general "how to make and decorate cupcakes" book. It focuses on designs rather than recipes. The decoration is also quite time consuming - again, more suitable to the time you would dedicate to making somebody's birthday cake.

There are 6 cupcake recipes at the back, along with some "cheats" for use with ready-bought cake mixes. I had to translate the American recipes with a bit of help online, but no problems there.

A lot of the ingredients listed are American, but UK alternatives can be found easily. If you want the real thing, just google "American Sweets" and there are loads of UK sites dedicated to that (or Selfridges stock a lot)

I've made the Alligator, with no problems. I used the chocolate cupcake recipe and it resulted in beautifully light, airy cakes. The vanilla frosting was Betty Crocker - I was surprised to find that most supermarkets stock this. (You can make your own using the recipe at the back). Most of the instructions were written rather than shown, meaning this book is more suitable for adults. The alligator lumps were improvised with Toblerone pieces rather than the specified "square chocolate alphabet cookies".

The result was great.

You get a lot of book for your money with this - 230 pages, over 50 different designs covering animals, novelty, Easter, Christmas, Hallowe'en. The pictures really inspire you to try them out.

A good alternative book for your cake-making collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Barolo 6 Nov 2008

Nice book, great inspiration. Worth noting it is US in origin, so recipes in US measures and other references to US sourced bits and bobs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have a go! 4 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because of the picture on the cover...my daughter was involved in a project at school making and selling cakes to raise money for the RSPCA. I have been cake decorating for many years and was expecting the designs to be quite complicated and difficult to acheive. I was not dissappointed at all by the designs in the book and was really glad to see that they could all be acheived with ready made items available from most supermarkets and very little previous experience. Anyone can have a go. In the end my 11 year old made her own cakes and the results were fantastic. I would advise anyone who is considering buying this book to take the plunge and have a go! You'll be amazed at what you can acheive.
