5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent History of a facinating railway line, 30 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hellingly Hospital Railway (Paperback)
Peter Harding has writen a facinating history of one of the more unusual railway lines ever built. Along with the railway history, there is social information as the institution (A mental hospital) is a type that no longer exists. Covering the period from late 1800's to nearly the present day there is very little missed out and the quality of photographs (B&W) is excellent. Philip Parker

5.0 out of 5 stars Another charming Peter Harding book, 28 Feb 2010
This review is from: Hellingly Hospital Railway (Paperback)
Having an interest in asylums and railways this book was always going to please. However, Peter Harding's writing is factual dense and concise. I have some trouble reading and get really frustrated with authors that write in a sloppy or messy style .Reading any of Harding's books rewards the effort.

asylums were often built near railways for ease of transport . (but also giving rise to many suicides) some had sidings, such as Napsbury Nr St. Albans in Hertfordshire. Hellingly may be unique in having had an internal rail system too. the changes in use of the railway as circumstances change are well documented. The photographs haunting and evocative.

A visit to the Kent and East Sussex Railway and the purchase of Harding's book on that railway inspired me to build a model light rail system, with a branch to an asylum. This book validated that branch.

Will be taking the book on out next trip to Hellingly station. Recommended Hellingly Hospital Railway
