Excellent Scholarship 5 Dec. 2002
By C. Gardner - Published on
Format: Paperback
This textbook is a thorough introduction to the three schools of philosophy which dominated the Hellenistic era. Although the treatments of Epicureanism and skepticism are just as comprehensive as that of the Stoics, the latter was Long's specialty and the chapter is exemplary in its depth, particularly in the treatment of the perennial problem of the "phantasia kataleptike" (unshakeable cognitive impression), the crucial point which divided the three schools' epistemology.
Very well-composed prose, a must for the beginner & expert alike.

hellenistic philosophy: stoics, etc. 6 Oct. 2009

Great read! Easy read! It is written for everyday people. Beyond my expectations. The book is organized so well. No wasted verbage. Fast moving to the point writing. It is easy to go back and revisit info. The author's style is so easy to follow. The explanation of the histories and principles of each philosophy are extremely thorough with plenty of references. I found out everything I wanted to know about these philosophies with fairness to all sides & opinions over the centuries. Getting this book was one of my better choices.

Still the Best Introduction to the Subject 12 Mar. 2015
By Thomas Llewellyn - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
If you're interested in learning more about Hellenistic philosophy (and who isn't?), then this is a great place to start. The author, an eminent classics scholar, is a world renowned expert on Stoicism. Reacting against the established schools founded by Plato and Aristotle, the three major movements of this era (c. 323 B.C.--50 B.C.) were Epicureanism, Skepticism, and Stoicism. Professor Long covers all three succinctly and eloquently, devoting approximately 60 pp. to the Epicureans, 30 pp. to the Skeptics, and 100 pp. to the Stoics. This is a fair distribution because the Skeptics offered little positive philosophy and Stoicism was definitely the most interesting and influential school of the period.

Should you desire to move to the next level in your study of Hellenistic philosophy, these are my recommended readings:

(1) The Cambridge History of Hellenistic Philosophy---(eds.) K. Algra et al. (An anthology that is scholarly and comprehensive. Should be on the shelf of every serious student of the subject.)

(2) Epicureanism---Tim O'Keefe (A lucid and informative book that works well for both introductory and advanced students.)

(3) The Cambridge Companion to the Stoics---(ed.) Brad Inwood (First-rate essays authored by some of the best experts in the field.)

(4) The Sceptics---R.J. Hankinson (Absolutely the best book on ancient Greek scepticism.)

Worth It 25 Feb. 2012

This book is an excellent read for anyone interested in the subject. It goes very well with Long's 2 volume work containing the fragments, and it can also stand on its own.
