When stand-up comedian Lee Parker(James Fisher) purchases an antique ring with the intention of proposing to the girl he adores, Nicole(Rebecca Herod), little does he know that he's buying the cursed ring of Josephine Stewart, a ring that has spelt misery for several happy couples in the past. Soon Nicole's life starts to unravel, as her father resorts to desperate measures to protect his only daughter, and Nicole herself starts to experience terrifying dreams. Is the malign presence of Josephine Stewart reaching out to the present day to claim more victims?
I can't quite put my (ring)finger on it, but there's something immensly likeable about this film. It looks at times as if its been shot on someones mobile phone and the sound quality is equally as murky at times. There are also some appaling CGI effects at the climax of the film. However, like I said before, there is something that transcends the negative aspects of the film to make it a wholly satisfying viewing experience.
Well, for a start, it has a terrific atmosphere running all the way through it. A perfectly ordinary scene can suddenly deliver a delicious little shock, another scene will take the viewer on an unexpected journey into slightly surreal, very funny comedy. It sort of reminds me of Norman J.Warren's 'Terror' but unlike that film has no pretensions(Terror thinks of itself as a British Suspiria) above entertaining it s audience. Another big positive is the acting, Herod and Fisher impressive as the leads and Cy Henty hilarious as creepy psychic Sinclair, who is also the narrator over the impressive opening and closing credits. There are also a couple of very funny performances from two uncredited actors as a pair of wise cracking security guards with a love/hate relationship for boiler suits.
So a film full of likeable characters played by likeable actors, very funny at times, a couple of genuine chills and a pretty unique directing style. What's not to like? I'll certainly be chasing up Pat Higgin's other genre films Trash House, The Devil's Music and Killerkiller on the back of this. If you're a fan of British horror I'd also like to highly recommend this great little film to you. 5 out of 5 anyway.
