This is advertised as "Emerald Hell (Hellboy(Graphic Novels)) ...". It isn't, it's a paperback novel and the only illustration is the picture on the front cover, so anybody ordering this book and expecting a grapic novel is going to be sadly disappointed.
That said, there is nothing in the story for anyone to be disappointed about. Hellboy is on his own when he catches a ride down to Georgia and he stays that way for the first quarter of the book, before meeting up with a preacher with some pretty remarkable powers of his own and searching for three missing (and pregnant) girls in the depths of a very nasty swamp.
Hellboy's feeling of being a loner because he is so different are understated, but touching, while the swamp is the 'Emerald' Hell of the title (couldn't call it 'Green Hell, that's already been done) and the humid and dangerous atmosphere in the swamp, with the alligators roaring, is so well done you can almost feel yourself there, watching the action. Best of all, though, I liked the twist with redemption at the end.
All in all, top marks for a good, and very atmospheric, story.
