Amazon.co.uk Review

Hellboy

In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favour of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

The feverish Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is a very busy sequel that might have looked unhinged in the hands of a less visionary director than Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka "Red," the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in "Men In Black") with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red's relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red's fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then--interestingly--brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an "elemental") succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro's art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it's really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy 2 a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. --Tom Keogh

Brilliant 4 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
If you are looking at this i'll presume you know the films or have seen them. Both are very good, although I prefer Hellboy 1, The ending is better for me and overall I like the story better. Hellboy 2 is good fun with superb effects, however I find the ending quite abrupt and a little disappointing.
The films come well presented in this nice looking metallic case with col black/gold design work. However I agree with the other review, the films are a pain to get out fro their grips and Hellboy 2 is confusing as to which disc is the feature and which is the bonus material!
2 good fun films that are very enjoyable in a cool (if a little annoying) case.

ACE CASE 26 Jun 2009
By XANDER
Format:DVD
Most people only buy the STEELBOOK EDITIONS because they have already watched the movies and loved them , so my review is about the actual steelbook case & not the movies ,except to say HELLBOY 9.5/10 , HELLBOY2 TGA 10/10 , Del-Torro has created two of the best super-hero movies that youre ever likely to see. HELLBOY 2 TGA in my oppinion was even better than the hugely enjoyable but very much hyped 'DARK KNIGHT ' , any-how back to my review of this steelbook edition

This 4 disc - 2 movie case looks great , I am a collector of dvds an I love the steelbook editions , and this Hellboy 1&2 steelbook is one of the best looking ones in my collection

I noticed in some of the reviews they are saying that the discs are a bit awkward to take out of the case , I havent found this at all , they are placed exactly the same way as they are in my other steelbook editions , only this time when you open up the case, because theres 4 discs they are on both sides of the open case (as pictured in customer images , below Amazons picture )

Also some people are saying its hard to tell what disc is no1 & no2 , well the HELLBOY discs are easy to tell apart because one is marked FEATURE DISC & the other is marked BONUS DISC , but HELLBOY 2 is a bit tricky to tell which disc is which , there doesnt seem to be any labeling on them to say which disc is 1 & 2 , so heres how it is HELLBOY 2 the movie FEATURE DISC 1 has a picture of HELLBOY & LIZ SHERMAN on it , special features BONUS DISC 2 has a picture of HELLBOY's face on it. All in all its a cracking little addition for your collection

IF YOU ARE A COLLECTOR OF DVDS ......THEN THIS IS A MUST HAVE EDITION FOR YOUR COLLECTION

This product is great! i think that this is a great price for both the hellboy films with bonus feature disks. although i found the layound inside the case a little confusing as the disks dont state which disks are the film and which are the bonus disks. But other then that they are fantastic!

This twin set dvd is a must have, full of funny and witty action with an horrific twist to it.
