5.0 out of 5 stars Constantine vs First Of The Fallen, 12 July 2005
By

This review is from: Hellblazer: Rake at the Gates of Hell (Paperback)
This collection is the end of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's run on Hellblazer , collecting issues 78 - 83 , as well as the one shot "Heartland" featuring Kit , John's girlfriend during this part of the series .

The story is set to the back drop of racial tension in East London , and involves Constantine trying to find a way out of the ever tightening rope around his neck , as fashioned by the First of the Fallen . A lot of the characters are familiar to those people from earlier in Garth's run , and may not be instantly recognisable to those who are picking the book up de novo . Also , a lot of plot points in the book date back to earlier in the 44 comic run that Ennis had on the series , and again , may lead to a lack of understanding for those new initiates on first read .

All in all , a vital book for those following the Hellblazer series who missed this run , but may well be hard to justify buying without familiarising yourself with earlier Hellblazer works .

5.0 out of 5 stars John beats theDevil?, 11 Jan 2004

This review is from: Hellblazer: Rake at the Gates of Hell (Paperback)
Since his first appearance as the Swamp Thing's benefactor in Alan Moore's Legendary run, I have always loved John Constantine. Something about how the man is barely able to get out of any situation, no matter how dangerous, always makes for good reading.

This is the final story arc by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, those talanted guys who gave us the wonder that is Preacher. The biggest problem with reading Hellblazer is that there is no real jumping on point for new readers, but dont let this deter you, as I'm sure that once you get a taster oh Mr Constantine, you will want to complete the set. Read, enjoy and collect. Its a must buy!
