Cracking Constantine 13 Nov 2008
Jamie Delano, hand picked by Alan Moore to write this title, is the first and definitive Hellblazer writer and this third volume collects my favourite story arc of his so far. It's great that DC are finally collecting the Delano's for the trade paperback audience so people can appreciate Johnny C's roots rather than picking up the more purile Ennis/Dillon stuff just because they read Preacher. The art is retro(what do you expect) but suitably trippy and surreal. Quality stuff.

By Rob
The Fear Machine was originally published as issues 14-22 of Hellblazer in 1988 and 89. I had been waiting for DC to re-publish it as a graphic novel, but recently managed to find the original issues at a local comic shop.

As the story begins, John Constantine is on the run from the police and desperate. He meets and is taken in by a group of new-age travellers, and becomes attracted by their lifestyle and connection with the earth. He starts a relationship with one of the group, Marj, and seeks to escape his old life of demons and dogdy-dealing.

However, brutal reality intrudes. First, he discovers that the military are carrying out experiments with Ley Energy at a nearby stone circle. Then there is an apparent police raid on the camp, during which Marj's daughter Mercury is kidnapped. The local police deny all knowledge. He realises that in order to save these people he cares about, he must again become the trench-coated magus.

John finds a group of powerful men seeking to using ritual magick for purposes of domination and control. In order to break the conspiracy and restore balance, he must abandon control and allow himself to be used in a ritual of a very different type.

When first published, only three years after the Battle of the Beanfield and at the height of the Thatcher era, the story had great contemporary resonance. Re-reading it ten years later, the storytelling and art still hold up.

A really terrible Constantine story. It's just boring and it doesn't really add anything to the overall mythos. Considering how tediously drawn out most of it is the ending feels rushed. Avoid unless you're a massive fan.
