I was looking forward to a modern, comprehensive documentary of the Pacific War. Although I ordered on Blu-ray I wasn't expecting anything special visually given the quality of WW2 vintage film.
I'm afraid this documentary has a dated and, as another reviewer has stated, amateurish feel to it. The music is jarring and grating, and there is liberal use of colorised images, which personally I prefer not to see. You end up getting distracted by trying to work out if it is real color, or colorised, although in this case it was pretty easy to spot because of the poor quality of the colorisation.
However, the worst failing, in my opinion, is the constant repetition of the same images. For example, the same film of a disabled Yorktown limping into Pearl Harbour is used to represent Saratoga undergoing repairs in the States. Or is it the other way round? Who knows.... we certainly won't find out by watching this film.
