Product Description

The Pacific War was the largest naval conflict in history. Across the huge expanses of the Pacific Ocean, the two most powerful navies in the world found themselves locked in a death struggle. From the Arctic conditions in the Aleutians, to the appalling heat and swelter of the South Pacific, every conceivable type of naval activity was represented: carrier aviation battles, surface engagements, bitterly fought night-battles, the largest amphibious landings of the entire war and the stealthy, brutal battles waged by and against submarines. This blu-ray includes rare combat footage, exclusive interviews with veterans from both sides, rare commentaries from the Doolittle raiders and discussions with a number of key insiders - including one of the planners of the attack on Pearl Harbour. Hell in the Pacific: The True Stories is the complete and unique story of the last great naval campaign in history. Episodes Comprise: 1. Rule The World 2. Attack at Dawn 3. Running Wild 4. The Giant Awakes 5. The Check Thrust 6. The Tide Turns 7. Island of Death 8. War Beneath the Sea 9. Tightening the Noose 10. I Cease Resistance

This documentary has a very amateurish feel to it. The score and graphics look cheap, as if it was made on a very small budget. The video is in standard definition and the audio is mono. The narrator is extremely boring. On the up side, it is full of facts and historical dates more suited to high school history class. Buy if you want to go to sleep (wife will kill me, she is a history teacher!!).

I was looking forward to a modern, comprehensive documentary of the Pacific War. Although I ordered on Blu-ray I wasn't expecting anything special visually given the quality of WW2 vintage film.

I'm afraid this documentary has a dated and, as another reviewer has stated, amateurish feel to it. The music is jarring and grating, and there is liberal use of colorised images, which personally I prefer not to see. You end up getting distracted by trying to work out if it is real color, or colorised, although in this case it was pretty easy to spot because of the poor quality of the colorisation.

However, the worst failing, in my opinion, is the constant repetition of the same images. For example, the same film of a disabled Yorktown limping into Pearl Harbour is used to represent Saratoga undergoing repairs in the States. Or is it the other way round? Who knows.... we certainly won't find out by watching this film.

I have always been very interested in the Japanese navy, so I enjoyed seeing some of the footage in this series of Japanese warships that I had never seen before. But that was pretty much it. The same footage was used over and over again. Sometimes completely inappropriately (e.g. showing battleships in action, when only cruisers took part).

The series had the feel of something that was intended to be grander, but that ran out of funding. The first 4 episodes dealt mainly with Pearl Harbour. It was something like the 7th episode before they got to Guadalcanal, and then they only dealt with the first few months. There were extended discussions of the Dolittle Raid; the battle in the Aleutians (a trul minor affair); and the rescue of some refugees aboard the submarine Cavallier. But nothing at all about the Battle of Leyte Gulf (the largest and last great naval battle in history); or about the island hopping (Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Saipan, etc., don't rate a mention?). And the series ended with Okinawa! What about The Bomb?

A baffling series.
