The story of Hell on Wheels follows the former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan (Anson Mount), who finds work on the railroad whilst tracking down the Union soldiers responsible for the murder of his wife and child. Cullen was fighting the war while his family remained on the farm (reminiscent of the Gladiator). Immediately, bam, you have our anti-hero Cullen executing one his targets, and it just continues from there.
Hell on Wheels is actually the name of the makeshift town. Out here in the wild West there are Indians, priests, villans, ex-soldiers, whores, and everything in between. Cullen is up against the Swede who enforces the railroads law, and takes a cut for himself on the side. Canadian actor Christopher Heyerdahl who plays the Swede, is stand out brilliant.
This is one hell of a good show. If you enjoy action, violence, great characters, and a gripping story line, then watch this. This is almost as good as Sons of Anarchy - Season 1 [DVD], Dexter : Complete Season 1 [DVD], and Game of Thrones - Season 1 [DVD].
The show is made by AMC in the US and they have decided to make Season 2. Fantastic.

This series was a great surprise, it has been some time since a good western series was made. A great cast and a very interesting look at the building of the rails from east to west in an effort to heal the wounds of the civil ware that had split the country north to south. Anson Mount is very good as Cullen Bonhanan the ex confederate solied bent on avenging the death of his wife and son at the hands of union soldiers. Colm Meaney as the head of the railway Thomas "Doc" Durrant is marvelous as the baddy you love to hate. You will also find a lot of familiar faces in a great ensemble cast.

Just to back up the above two reviews. I discovered the series by accident, just in time to miss episode one... It is well-written, well-casted, well-acted and 'well' just about everything else. It is tense, gripping and almost visceral. You can feel the tension, hell, you can almost SMELL it.
The main plot rattles along, all the while accompanied by several sub-plots, vested interests and twists and turns involving different cast members at different times.
Basically, this is Great!

This is a very well put together series. Excellent cast, mesmerizing plot and fast paced action. I recommend it unreservedly.
