I've read about four books by Linda Fairstein prior to reading Hell Gate and was generally satisfied with all of them. I cannot say the same about Hell Gate. The plot of Hell Gate involves Prosecutor Alex Cooper investigating a shipwreck containing human cargo and a political sex scandal of a promising New York congressman now fallen from grace. While the plot's premise is interesting, Fairstein's execution of the plot is not. The reasons for this is that Fairstein spends too much time on providing a historical background of New York's landscape and its tradition with human trafficking and on introducing a plethora of characters -- several of which are pretty thinly developed -- and not enough time on providing sufficient action and thrills to maintain a high level of interest. As a result, too often I found myself skimming through the pages. All in all, Hell Gate is, at best, just an okay read; but it is not a book I'd highly recommend.
