Ham and Highgate Express
'an explosive book'

Book Description
Struggling against drug addiction, Terry Donaldson had started
to make a success of his life, but it wasn't to last. His Jekyll and Hyde
lifestyle--TV presenter by day, scouring the streets of London for drugs
and prostitutes by night--meant he lost everything, and led him to the
point of desperation.

Facing financial ruin, he agreed to smuggle drugs from Barbados, but was
caught and sent to one of the world's worst prisons, where he remained for
over 3 years. Honest and disturbing, Hell in Barbados is the true story of
how Donaldson witnessed stabbings, beatings, shootings and a full scale
riot as the prison went up in flames.

In this extraordinary book, he describes the true horror of prison life in
the Caribbean, the depravity that brought him there, and the years of
brutality he was forced to endure.

Terry Donaldson's story depicts how a drug-addicted smuggler found his
salvation in the unlikeliest of places. Told with shocking honesty, Hell in
Barbados takes us into the mind of an addict and shows us just how low a
man can fall before he finds the strength to save himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars incredibly insightful, 27 Mar 2007
By Ms. Mp Gideon (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Im scrating my head wondering why on earth a customer gave this book 1 star.
I finished the book a few weeks ago and thought it was excellent and definatly able to hold its own against some of the other biographical heavy weights such as "A million pieces little Pieces" By James Frey and dare I say "A Piece of Cake" the Cupcake Brown Story. These were intense stories and dont get me wrong, very engaging and thought provoking. However Donaldson's book shows that you dont have to come from a broken home or low prospects to become an addict. The man lead by all intents and purposes a good life. Good education from one of this countries top universities, had his own business, family, money but all that gots belly up when you have a drug problem.
Donaldson is able to give you a clear depiction of what the hell is going on. Whether he's back packing around the world in a drug addled haze or running in blind panic in the midst of a prison riot. He also has the incredible gift of making the reader laugh. Granted that some of the things he experiences are far from comedic, he is able to see the humour in all the madness
I found my self rooting for him in different situations, whether drugs were involved or not. Even though I knew what was coming, when arrested at the airport, part of me wanted him to make it safely on the plane and get home.
This is a book you wont be able to put down, I couldnt! Unlike some of the others mentioned above that at times got so harrowing, I had to put them to the side for a while to get my strength back to continue, Hell in Barbados really is a journey that i had to go on and had no regrets about doing so.

1.0 out of 5 stars It reads like a drunk's rant down the pub: Too many glossed over facts, with rambling prose & unfocused story`.
Firstly, if you want to read a brilliant book on this type of subject matter do not miss "Welcome to Hell" or Warren Fellow's book, "The Damage Done". Read more
