5.0 out of 5 stars Damo's the man!!, 29 Jun 2007
By Mick Bolton - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In reply to the first review by Stuart, I am not a fan of yours with an attitude like that! You didn't need to open your review with your thoughts on the Irish, just stick to the facts!

Damo's latest album really sees him come of age, the songs are more mature and the sound is fuller, that's not to say that his earlier stuff isn't amazing, just listen to Shots and Seize The Day.

This (if there's any justice) should be the album that really puts Damo on the map and gets him recognised for what he is, one of the greatest songwriters to come out of anywhere in a long time, let alone Ireland and as one of the greatest songwriters/storytellers of his generation.

It's hard to pick out a stand out track as they are all excellent and so varied, but if I had to pick a couple that are personal favourites, I would have to say 'Chase The Light' or 'How Strange' but it's a hard choice!

Damo has been rightly lauded by the critics for this album and with fans like Shane MacGowan, Sinead O'Connor, Morrissey and Christy Moore, it's easy to see why his songwriting skills are up there with the greats.

I would recommend this album and all of Damo's other stuff to anyone that loves passionate and beautiful music that will tear your heart to shreds at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ireland's finest songwriter, and most honest voice!, 12 Nov 2008
By Mrs. Lorraine Jamieson (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Damien Dempsey has the most beautiful and powerful voice I have ever heard. He shows this no better on "massai" the opening track of this album and the the title track "to hell or barbados". He writes more honestly and from the heart than any other songwriter I have heard, be it in Ireland or out. All of his albums should be bought and listened to over and over again!

3.0 out of 5 stars ...begone begorrah..., 26 May 2007
By Mr. H "the-rocker.co.uk" (Embra) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
I'm not a fan of the Irish, they've tried to kill me twice too often. If it wasn't for the contribution Phil Lynott made to me surviving my teenage years I would have happily erased them from my musical map of the world long ago. They invented U2, people! Unforgiveable. Now I've read the book "To Hell Or barbados", so I had this dreadful vision of yet another Irish singer / songwriter bleating on and on about how it's all my fault. And I wasn't wholly wrong, just mainly.

Yes, there are a couple of songs where the (in Ireland) chart topping, multi award winning Mr Dempsey goes all Bono on yer ass, but in the main these are personal songs of love, hate, redemption and hope, well written, arranged and produced. He's also managed to write one of the best anti-drugs songs ever in the shape of 'Serious'. Although how many smackheads listen to anti-drugs songs and go "aha!" is open to question. I could do without the cod reggae - did UB40 teach us nothing - but when he just opens his heart and sings like he does on 'Summer's In My Heart', then it's a rare treat.

A lot of the material is very Guardian oriented, but then you listen to 'Chase The Light' or 'How Strange' and you find some forgiveness in your heart. It's much better to hit and miss than never hit at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album!
Another batch of great songs from Damo(except 10 & 11)!
The first nine songs are good enough to make this a hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable talent
This is Dempsey's fourth official album and it really is a departure from his usual more 'folkey' but extremely passionate songs. Read more
