I bought this to replace an older copy. Audie has written about everything that happened to him and his comrades and never once went into any great detail that this was his war, this was his great glorious moment. This alone should tell you what this man was like, without the knowledge that he was America's most highly decorated soldier - his reputation only enhances this work and never once colours it. He never glorifies the conflict, highlighting again and again the whole scale of human tragedy. He doesn't demonise the Germans either - he tells it plainly and unvarnished and relatively unbiased. This is the definitive book that everyone who has any interest in the fighting men of the Second World War should read and it is a book that everyone should read out of the necessity to understand the sacrifice of men, regardless of nationality, regardless of politics and who truly want to learn something.
Thank you Audie, for teaching me things.
