Very exotic blend of jazzy sounds and heartrending ballads from a real talent. Think I heard her live at the Marlborough Jazz Festival a couple of years ago - the background noise and setting didn't really do her justice. Fantastic to be able to hear her in the comfort of one's own sitting room - just perfect for winding-down before dinner or playing in the car with the sun shining in - in fact, this girl's got sun in her voice. The lyrics are terrific - thoughtful but not overworked and, in places, genuinely poetic. I'd really recommend this.

Honey Rides Solo 14 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
I can understand why 'Uncle' Terry Wogan was so taken with Ms Hicks in her previous incarnation as lead singer with the HoneyRiders.

Whilst being compared to Tanita Tikaram and Sinead O'Connor is no bad thing, I don't believe it tells the whole story. Crystal Gale might be nearer the mark.

This self-titled album is very snazzy 'late night' jazz, nicely produced, well played and sung. And therby lies the crux of the matter. Sinead stumbled upon a Prince classic song in 'Nothing Compares 2 U' and Tanita wrote her own foot tappin' hit 'Good Tradition'. Crystal's brown eyes turned blue. Helen sadly doesn't (yet) have such a killer song in her canon; it's certainly not on this album (although 'I Miss You' and 'Clear' come close).

Put this on in the wee small hours, curl up on the sofa with a glass of something you like, and, in the words of the great Dobie Gray 'just drift away'. Just don't expect a standout classic in the mix.

Ah! Turns out Ms Hicks used to sing with HoneyRiders, whom I recall as being a wee bit on the special side. And that's special in a good way. But this is actually waaaay beyond special.

If you strip the album down to its very bare essentials, then you're looking at a fairly traditional singer / songwriter album, albeit one with exceptionally good songs.

The magic is in the way the songs are then built up into something remarkable. hell, anyone can lay bricks but not many can finish up the Palacio de Musica. And on the likes of lead single 'Be Myself', 'I Miss You' and 'Broken', Helen J has hit heights few can manage.

Yes, there are a few moments where things get a bit artsy and Guardian like, but measure for measure you'll be toiling to find a better blend of folk, jazz and country. And I doubt you will.
