Product Description

BBC Review

Held is the first album proper from this enigmatic producer – said to be from Manchester, although Gothenburg and Berlin have also been mooted – whose debut EP, With U, came out on Tri Angle last year.

The home of "witch house" acts Balam Acab and oOoOO, the label also signed How to Dress Well who, like Holy Other (and, for that matter, The Weeknd), appears to be involved in a project to remake RnB as a ghostly, ethereal soundtrack to the end of the world.

Unlike HTDW’s Tom Krell, however, Holy Other has yet to reveal his name or to remove the shroud from his head when he performs live. The anonymity matches the mysterious murk of the music, with its touches of not just RnB but the aforementioned witch house as well as dubstep and ambient electronica, although this isn’t cool synthesizer music so much as R&B, hip hop, pop and garage left in the cold night air.

The pace is slow, the mood is solemn verging on the sepulchral – that alias of his would appear to be a deliberate nod to the sacred properties of his favourite music (he even used to play a track called BOYZiiMEN) – and the atmosphere is glacial.

And it’s uniformly sorrowful. These are bass ballads for clubs where everyone sits around wearing headphones luxuriating in their own private misery. The tracks are instrumental but there are voices everywhere, cut up and tweaked or stretched out, leaving echoes of silence. Inpouring is typical of Held’s abstract quiet-storm funk with its aching keyboard chords and pitch-shifted vocals adding to the aural fog.

Throughout, Holy Other uses repetition to heighten the sense of life as one long cruel cycle of longing and despair. Even the song titles – (W)here, Nothing Here, In Difference, Tense Past – hint at what happens when all feelings are exhausted and you’re left drained of emotion or desire.

But it’s all the more affecting for that, and for all its cleverness it’s not just a calculated exercise. There could even be commercial potential for this music; it sounds like Michael Jackson slowed down to 18bpm, or R. Kelly in Hell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Other Worldly 27 Aug 2012
By Twig
Format:Audio CD
Never has the term 'keenly awaited' meant more for me. I absolutely loved the ep, With U. Touch of Burial, touch of James Blake, but identifiably its own thing. Finally, Held is out. And it is gorgeous. The Manchester man in the black hood has triumphed.

Atmospheric synths overlay deep dark basslines. There are swooning electronic strings and snatches of echoey vocals that evoke late nights in pulsating cities of shadowy alleyways and flashing neon lights. Joyful, life-affirming, but never cloying every track is a soundscape to a different intimate scene.

I've seen the album listed as R&B. Got to confess, I don't really understand the way this term has mutated. I guess it's an age thing. For me R&B means Stax, Atlantic, Motown. Today we have Contemporary R&B, which seems to bear no resemblance. I'd call this dubstep, but then what do I know? Whatever the genre, Held is an absolute joy.

Other worldly, I've called this review for want of a better title. Thing is, I'm not sure which other world. All I know is that I'd love to live there!

I have listened to probably too much electronic music, but this is just sublime, emotional, textured music. Play this loud and be astonished by the power of this disc...sheer brilliance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush, atmospheric, endearing 16 Sep 2012
By Brizzle
Format:Audio CD
This is absolutely lush. Honestly, nothing has touched me like this since way back to Burial - i care less how cliche that might sound. The tracks with the pitch changes are magnificent, draggin you in and out. This music is really good for working too as weel due to the lack of lyrics. Thank for this music, I might just buy the album, even though i can listen for free because the quality is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a hidden gem. Or maybe a hidden gold mine. 2 Mar 2013
By Ethan B. - Published on Amazon.com

This is the good stuff. It's been a long time since I've heard music this good, and there have been several musicians my friends have been recommending to me that I don't seem to find as good as they do. I was really starting to wonder whether I had completely lost interest in music (I like lots of genres but I'm always looking for something new). Well, 'Held' definitely disproved that theory.

I think I've heard my fair share of similar-sounding music to this, and among them, this by far takes the cake. Like a reviewer said of his last EP (which, by the way, I enjoyed, but not nearly as much as 'Held'), this definitely isn't traditional music, and few others have created music this pure. There's a certain feeling you get when you don't want a song to end, and I can say I feel it at the end of every track. While they're all a little similar, each creates its own little atmosphere that is thoroughly enjoyable to spend time in, and when it's about to end, you just want to grab that feeling and hold onto it forever.. until the next song comes on and pulls you right into the next world. I felt this especially with the tracks "Inpouring" and "Held" - nothing like it.

I'm not gonna say much else, but you really, really, really gotta buy this. Holy Other has created beauty here like nothing I've ever heard or seen before.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely sad and beautiful 22 Sep 2013

A true pleasure to listen. Exciting in its difference from others attempting the same thing. Similar to Nicolas Jaar's Space is only Noise which is also a must own for this hazy Greman underwater dreamscape genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent electronica 13 Aug 2013

Nothing groundbreaking but I've been getting more into electronic music these days and this is a solid release I often play in the background while I'm cooking or cleaning.
