4.0 out of 5 stars Team Seth! 22 Aug. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition
Starbright is the first (and so far, only) in a great series by... you guessed it, Rachel Higginson. Ms. Higginson has, once again, created a great read for YA readers of all ages; it is so very appropriate for even the younger readers of the genre.

Stella is a star, the female version of an angel warrior which are on the lowest ring of Angels that heaven has to offer. That doesn't mean that she isn't important; quite the opposite in fact. Stella is destined to be the future protector of Earth, our dear planet being the last one holding life. One day she will be joined with her counterpart, the male star that she will be connected to in heart, body, and soul. Together they will work to protect Earth from the evil darkness that has been destroying life throughout the galaxy.

In the meantime Stella is looking forward to life staying the same as it has for the past 16 years, like that of any other small town girl and counting down until her 18th birthday which will mark the complete arrival of her powers. She thought the next few years would consist of going to school, hanging out with her best-friend Tristan, and trying not to glow in the middle of class.

Darkness, instead, comes early for her and sends her plans of normalcy crashing down. With the arrival of evil that threatens Earth's very existence, the people 'upstairs' decide that Stella's going to need the help of her Counterpart, Seth, who puts not only her life into disarray, but her heart as well.

Rachel is an expert in the love triangle department. This is the first in the series, and boy does Stella have a tough road ahead of her. Not only is she going to have to shape-up into a world class (eh, universe class?

3.0 out of 5 stars Rachel PLEASE learn how to end a story 14 Aug. 2013
    By lolage
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this on the back of reading the star crossed series, and was pleased to see that the spellchecker was turned off so silly spelling errors were barely visible. The story as with all Rachel's books was gripping and easy to read with a great story idea, but sadly it didn't go any-where. I was taught all stories should have a beginning a middle and an end, Rachel excels at beginnings and her middles are great but there never seems to be a concrete conclusion.

The story line is that of a teenage love triangle where the heroine is a star(literally) out to save the world from evil, By the end of the book she has neither chosen which of her 2 suitors she loves nor has she saved the world, so rather disappointing.

PS I would not allow my 13yr old read this as I consider it too adult, a book for 15yr+ and aimed at girls mostly

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting new series with great potential 24 Oct. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition
UPDATE: Reread the newest version, and there were a lot less editing issues, phew. I'm still sticking to my 4 star rating. Parts of this just sucked me in and had the magic that is in all Ms. Higginson's works. Seriously, she writes characters that are complex and interesting, situations that make my heart break and burst, and emotions that leap off the page. I'm sticking with not being uber happy with the love triangle. I can honestly say I don't know where it's going, and I don't like that. I don't even have a side. I switch sides as often as Stella. And it leaves me not feeling like I know Stella or the boys enough. She isn't quite as strong as say Eden was. I want to see a bit more of her as she is. I'm HUGELY excited for the next book though. THere is just so much to this story and I cannot wait to see where it goes!!

PREVIOUS REVIEW: Hmmmm...didn't get into it quite as well as Reckless Magic. Ms. Higginson has an amazing imagination though...I just found it harder to get behind the Stella/Tristan/Seth almost triangle. In the Star Crossed series, you got to get behind Kiran in the first book before being totally bowled over with another possibility... So I'm not sure what I want for Stella...or for that matter what I want for Seth. Tristan didn't get under my skin as much as I was expecting. Maybe it was just not the right time for me to read this? I don't know, but it wasn't as awesome as I was anticipating. I think one of the things that really drove me crazy were the obvious editing issues...I don't know if I somehow got an unedited version, but I checked amazon for an updated copy and didn't have one. There were major POV issues (in the same sentence it would say "I" and then later "her")....

I love Rachel Higginson and I loved the Star-Crossed series so much that I was desperately wanting to love her second series just as much as her first. But I was wary about whether or not I would like this series ever since I found out what this book was going to be about. I've read books before about angels, demons, and stars living on earth (several of them I've ended up dropping halfway through because I thought they were lame and I just couldn't continue reading them) so when I learned that this book was going to be one of those types of story lines I was immediately depressed. I think those books always end up getting one star from me because their plots just never seem to work out right; or maybe I am just not a fan of that type of supernatural plot line like other people are (hey, everyone has different genres they enjoy which is why we have so many genres out there so everyone has the opportunity to read the kind of books they love - so maybe this book is catered to those people who are in love with reading books of this type of story line).

Anyway, I was more than willing to give this book a chance despite my track record with star/angel books in the past because I had faith that Rachel Higginson could work her magic. I absolutely enjoyed the beginning of the book as I was introduced to Stella, Tristan, and Seth and the world they lived in. I had the excitement of reading a new book and another series by my favorite author that rolled me along as the book progressed and the relationship dynamics between all the characters that kept me intrigued. But let's face it, I fell in love with Tristan before I even met him, so when he wasn't around I was missing him and just hoping he would come back. And because he wasn't around a whole lot I grew impatient.
