'As much as I enjoyed Daughter of the Blood I loved Heir to the Shadows even more' Feeling Fictional.

From the Back Cover

Witch - the woman who would bring freedom to the realms - has come, but now she is lost in darkness, and has a long road to recovery ahead of her. While her adopted father Saetan waits for her to return to the living world, the third side of the triangle needed to complete the prophecy - the love, Daemon - walks in the Twisted Kingdom on the edge of madness. As insidious whispers and dark schemes ferment treachery and betrayal, Jaenelle must make a choice: to protect those she loves, she must be more than an heir, she must become a Queen.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
I can't help but compare author Anne Bishop with this novel's main character Jaenelle, a long-awaited dark queen possessing a power no queen has ever seen the likes of before, and I would gladly serve in any literary court Anne Bishop chose to form. Just as Jaenelle establishes herself as the Queen of the Darkness in all her glory over the course of these pages, so Anne Bishop stakes a rightful claim to the title of Queen of Dark Fantasy. Heir to the Shadows accomplishes the impossible: not only is it a more impressive novel than Daughter of the Blood, it blows that first novel right out of the water with its intensity and extraordinary vision. I only wish I could convey in words the originality, genius, emotion, power, and literary magic that is Heir to the Shadows.
You really must read Daughter of the Blood before immersing yourself in this second novel of the trilogy. The realms of Terreille, Kaeleer, and Hell are not fictional worlds you can just drop in to visit, nor are the characters in this story at all comprehensible without your having made the journey to this point alongside them. The "good guys," by way of example, include Saetan, the High Lord of Hell, and his half-demon sons Daemon and Lucivar, as well as Jaenelle who is "dreams made flesh," Witch herself. The final set of events closing out Daughter of the Blood reach in and squeeze your heart dry, as you watch a beautiful and innocent young girl suffer dreadfully, and it is this emotional crescendo that breaks across the very first pages of Heir to the Shadows and carries you along with it, breathless, for close to 500 pages. You would think that such a powerful young queen as Jaenelle would lead a charmed life, but let there be no doubt that Jaenelle has suffered and continues to suffer terribly.

This is a great follow-up - wonderful to see Jaenelle as she's growing up and to see more of Lucivar and get to know him. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I feel that there was quite a bit of Daemon in this book, just that the scenes are, well, as they should be for the plot. I think it was brave of the author to leave him out when the plot dictated that - it would have been easy to have lots of him in the book, because he's such a powerful character.
Definatley worth wasting a few hours on.

I love the way the author plays with word, or known "facts". As Saetan, the demon lord of Hell, but here, Hell isn't as opposed to heaven. Dark isn't opposed to light, but as always, good is opposed to evil. The characters are wonderful, the plot, at least in this first book of the trilogy, is great. It's a world I will visit over and over again.

"Heir to the Shadows" is the second book in AB's Black Jewels Trilogy and is as fabulous as its predecessor "Daughter of the Blood".

Following immediately after the horrendous events in book one; with Jaenelle's life in the balance and Daemon's fall into madness, Saetan takes Jaenelle to Hell to heal. It takes two years for her to awaken from her coma and suffering amnesia; she not only forgets her rape but also her beloved Daemon. Daemon in turn has fallen into the Twisted Kingdom (madness) and believes Jaenelle to be dead. In fact it takes a further thirteen years before this couple are again (physically) re-united; an event which doesn't take place until book 3 "Queen of the Darkness".

From the first page this is a wonderful, magical and poignant journey as Jaenelle reaches maturity and becomes the most powerful Queen in history. Yet she refuses to set up her own court; establishing complete dominion over those she rules until Terreille Queens begin staking claims in Kaeleer the Shadow Realm. Unfortunately for Terreille these claims include the slaughter of Jaenelle's friends the Kindred; unacknowledged Blood animals able to wield the power of a jewel. With the slaughter of the unicorns Jaenelle takes her place as the Queen of Darkness and selects her First Circle; other powerful Queens and Warlords both human and not; loyal friends who will aid in her coming battle against Heketah, Dorothea and their followers.

Rather than continuing to explore the relationship between Jaenelle and Daemon, AB takes a side step; concentrating instead on Lucivar, the Queens and Warlords of Kaeleer and the Kindred.

(Hey, Daughter of the Blood was pretty hard to beat!) I am in love with Daemon after reading the 2 books in this series. I can't wait for the 3rd book! Surreal is great. I really hope she gets to meet Titian sometime soon. Jaenelle's somewhat abnormal childhood is a fascinating, sometimes humerous mix of The Godfather and The Addams Family. If you never do anything else with your life, I recommend you at least read this book.

I just wanted to write this not because my opinion has any weight, but because I wanted to express how very impressed I was with this book. I normally don't read any fantasy books, but I was told that Daughter of the Blood was such a good book. At first I wasn't so convinced of its reputation as a great book, but I slowly came to believe it as I read further and further into this dark world that Anne Bishop has so amazingly put together.
The very next week after I finally finished Daughter of the Blood I went out and bought the sequel, Heir to the Shadows. I found that book to be even better. I couldn't put it down and I have just finished it today. I just stumbled over this web site looking for the next book and well I thought I would write and just express how very happy I was with the two novels that Anne Bishop has written, and I am eagerly awaiting the third book of the Black Jewel trilogy!!!
