I have just bought the film of Heidi as a present for my grandaughters. I decided to pre-view this before giving it and I found it to be a lovely film, but not at all suitable for younger viewers. The acting was good and the scenery suberb, but the story line not as accurate as I would have liked and some scenes were quite unsuitable for younger children.
Prefer the original story as the book.

I was very disappointed with this DVD. I think it should have said that this was 'based on the original story'. It was quite frightening for small children unlike the book and departed from the original story. Why change what is a well loved story suitable for children of any age and change it completely in places? What is the point?

Sadly, though well acted and filmed, the story had been changed and edited so much that it no longer really reflected the original book thus was disappointing to anyone who has read it before seeing the film.

This beautiful story has entranced my grandchildren for the last ten years or so; and even now they are teenagers, they still requested copies for Christmas, so they will have them to show to their children.

I was just looking on my recommendation page and I came across a film that had me hooked as a child. I've just turned 20 and I just had to purchase this amazing film. The acting is incredible, especially the girl who portrays Heidi. The storyline is beyond touching and I would recommend this film to any family. I was also very impressed at the price, so thank you Amazon :)

I love the story of Heidi, I am actually reading it (in the original German) to my mother and we are both enjoying it as much - if not more - than when we were little girls. The original story really does transcend generational barriers and is a charming story for all ages.

However, this film is NOT the story of the book.

The scenery is glorious. (Although if I were a pedant I might make more of a gripe about the fact that the delightful mountains are the Austrian mountains of East Tirol rather than Heidi's own Swiss Alps.). The acting is adequate on the whole, and for a few roles is actually rather good... ...And for these points I have awarded the two stars.

The script is moderately good at times but in the main is poor, and has periods of being absolutely dire. Laughably bad in places.

But for me the main reason to lower my rating is the mangling of the beautiful story.

I can accept a few minor changes - and there are MANY minor changes , including: ....Heidi's father was called Tobias in the book, why alter his name?...The reason for the Grandfather's bitterness is more complicated in the book, and I can see that simplifying it made sense for a relatively short film.....and was there any need to kill off the old grandmother? (other than for mawkish sentimentality?!)

Some changes are bigger - and really spoil the film for someone who loves the book...consider the characters, in particular of Klara and Dete which are changed beyond comprehension. Klara is a selfish whining brat and Dete is a money-grabbing schemer...neither of which comes from the novel! ...and Peter breaking the wheelchair is totally altered in the film..in the novel there is no hint of it being an accident!

The finale is completely different.
