Product Description

Product Description

Anyone interested in modern philosophy is familiar with the name of Martin Heidegger, but there is a serious gap in even the most complete accounts of his life and thought. This is Heidegger s association with, and influence on, the discipline of psychotherapy. Late in life, Heidegger became engaged as a lecturer and consultant in a project that led to the establishment of one of the first schools of existential psychotherapy Daseinsanalyse. Much of this work emerged in the vital but little discussed Zollikoner Seminare. Hans W. Cohn explores the role of Heidegger s thought in providing an alternative basis for psychotherapeutic practice to the dominant psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive approaches. Cohn also focuses strongly on the practical therapeutic relevance of Heidegger s ideas. This book will be essential reading for students and teachers of modern philosophy, as well as existential psychotherapists and all practitioners interested in existential approaches to therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventurous unearthing; articulation lacking, 17 Sep 2003

This does exactly what it says on the cover - no more, no less. The work seems to be most interesting to those already involved or familiar with existential therapies, who wonder why Heidegger's contribution to the therapeutic project has been so persistantly glossed over or obliquely footnoted. Despite his short political foray into German National Socialism, Heidegger seems to have helped pave the way for existential therapy like some shadowy and unacknowledged benefactor. I hope to find more on his works, written from the point of view of the relevance of his philosophies to therapy.

I must confess that I found Cohn's style was not particularly exciting. By now the therapeutic challenges that Cohn raises are nothing "new" and perhaps are better illustrated by Spinelli, but it is somehow fulfilling to hear these challenges anticipated in Heidegger's long-neglected voice.

One of the problems with Heidegger seems to be that if you try to simplify the language, then the poetry and complexity of what he is saying is lost. Short of reading Being and Time, or one of the numerous commentaries on it, which at this point is something I really don't want to take on, I feel that this is perhaps as much as any therapist really needs to see that all those familar footnote experiences do actually refer to something the man actually said. In this respect the work serves as a bit of an intellectual bridge between the familiar therapeutic traditions and the unfamiliar complexity of a philosophy which regularly deals with concepts like "dasein's being-with-others-in-the-world". But don't expect this style to articulate the experience of finding oneself struck by these existential encounters.

No-one else seems to be undertaking this work of "bridging", and I feel Cohn deserves bags of encouragement for taking on such a difficult task, so I'm rating this 5/5.
