More About the Author

Tony Fletcher is the author of six non-fiction books, a memoir, and a novel. His biography of drummer Keith Moon has been named in many a Best Music Book list, and his biography of R.E.M., updated in 2013 as 'Perfect Circle,' has been published in over half a dozen countries. His 2009 study, 'All Hopped Up and Ready To Go: Music From The Streets of New York 1927-77,' published by WW Norton, covered multiple musical genres and was internationally acclaimed. His most recent biography, 'A Light That Never Goes Out: The Enduring Saga of The Smiths' was published by William Heinemann in the UK, by Crown Archetype in the US, and is now available in paperback. His memoir of his South London schooldays, 'Boy About Town,' is also now available in paperback through Windmill Books.

Fletcher gained his entry into music journalism by founding a fanzine at his London school in 1977; by the time Jamming! ceased publication in 1986, it was selling 30,000 copies a month. Along the way he interviewed the likes of Pete Townshend, Paul McCartney, Paul Weller and U2, as well as dozens of up-and-coming, predominantly independent post-punk acts.

A contributor over the years to a multitude of magazines, newspapers, radio and television shows, primarily in the UK and USA, Fletcher now lives with his family on a mountaintop near the village of Woodstock in New York State. There he runs, skis, maintains his web site www.ijamming.net, serves on his local school board, and plays Hammond B-3 and Rickenbacker in the Catskill 45s, a group that only performs songs from 45 calendar years ago.

From page one you can hear the bpm and it's got rhythmn. The big bad apple of the 90's, sweltering in blood, heat, drugs and sex - lots of sex and lots of drugs too for that matter. You can hear and feel the music that Fletcher describes as the suspense builds all the way to the end and it's worth it. You have to keep reading. The descriptions of 'underground' Manhattan have you walking the streets alongside the hero, Holy like you know the island -and even he is a suspect. It's one of those stories you find yourself thinking about when you're not reading it and it was irksome to have to put it down to get on with real life inbetween. I hate reviews that tell you the plot so all I will say is if you like music, you like sex, well drawn characters, a well paced and clever story by someone who knows how to write about all of the above then read Hedonism.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

With the backdrop being New York City in the early 90's, the author takes us on a pacey 'who done it' ride through the murky world of nightclubs & their workers at a time of cultural change.

The plot has some nice twists & turns and is full of gritty detail on sex, drugs & rock & roll. Not a book for children this one! Some interesting cultural observations are woven into the plot. Music & tastes are changing from Goth to Rave & the stakes are high for the nightclubs & promoters. Who will be a winner, and who will be a loser?

Well, as with all good suspense, I didn't find out untill the last few pages. I enjoyed reading this book, and will keep an eye out for future work from this author. Recommended.

Readers familiar with Tony Fletcher's epic biography of Keith Moon will know the guy can spin a ripping yarn but Hedonism blew me away. It's a gripping tale of the New York underground club scene and the fascinating characters that operate therein from the grasping, seedy club owners to the power crazy DJs and the lowly bus boys and dancers on their way up. It's funny, outrageous, gritty but without pretention. The underlying mystery unfolds gradually and stands up to scrutiny by sad crime story obsessed CSI or Law and Order afficionados such as myself. Those of a nervous disposition should give it a wide berth however as steamy S&M sex pervades the novel. Fabulous!

This book is amazing and should be read by anyone who has been in the scene - have pounded the hard Manhattan pavement - and have lived to remember the crazy events that sew together a life. I read this book while commuting on the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan - reading while underground about the underground - poetic. I could not put it down - and made my commute to work easier for the past week or two. The writing, the descriptive language, the choice of words, made the nightlife come alive and all of the wonders that is NYC.
