Product Description

We believe this practical handbook is the most detailed reference available on hedge laying, and gives clear practical advice for anyone wanting to master this craft. Throughout this handbook many regional styles are described, advice is also given on choosing suitable species for a new hedge, as well as planting techniques and aftercare. Construction and repair of Cornish hedges are also included. Hedges are an important feature of the British countryside, as well as being a valuable wildlife habitat. Neglect, rather than removal is now the greatest threat and many hedges need laying to encourage new growth from the base.

This represents probably the best guide to hedge creation, laying and renovation around, though it probably will not meet the need the needs of professional nurserymen and planters (Try 'New Hedges for the Countryside' for this). The new edition includes information from the National Hedgelaying Society on regional styles.

I'm finding this A4 format handbook thorough, clear, and helpful. As a complete newcomer to hedge-laying, I attended a very good local practical training day 6 weeks ago, and then bought this book to follow it up. Now I know what I am doing (!) and am happily getting on with laying hedges myself, which is fun, satisfying - and free! To illustrate the text, there are line drawings which help you to understand what is required and how different parts of the UK do things (some photos might perhaps have helped further). There's no substitute for practical instruction, but this is just what you need to follow it up. Thanks, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, for a great handbook.

Very useful for the professional or novis, this guide gives useful information from ordering the right amount of materials to techniques, seasonal guides etc. A much valued reference book on our shelf! I know nothing about it but attempting it this year on the hedgeline surrounding our property and my husband is a trained tree surgeon who has trained and done hedgelaying before - The book is used by us both!

I purchased a field in 2012 for my horses but had no idea how to maintain a hedge other than keep cutting it. Problem is that the hedge hadn't been maintained for many years and was very sparse in places, certainly didn't offer any security at all. This book educated me well in all aspects of hedge management. In the end I decided to pay a professional to lay the roadside hedge but I will in future be laying the internal hedges myself. I find myself constantly referring back to it.
