Product Description

Product Description

The hedgehog has long been a popular and familiar animal, both in its appearance in suburban country gardens and as an endearing character in folk tales and children's books. As a consequence, there have been many popular books on the hedgehog, but none which really open the reader's eyes to the 13 or more species outside of Europe. In this book, the author provides a guide to the world's hedgehogs in general and also treats the European species in greater detail than ever before, with close attention to results of the latest research. Coverage includes all aspects of behaviour and ecology, including their extra-ordinary defensive adaptions, feeding, breeding, and hibernation. The study and care of hedgehogs in the garden also is presented. A useful appendix provides the basics of hedgehog care and treatment, and will be invaluable to vet-erinarians working with sick animals. Nigel Reeve has studied hedgehogs for many years and provides the answer to every hedgehog question that can currently be answered. Ruth Lindsay's delightful line drawings and 20 colour photographs embellish the text.

4.0 out of 5 stars For hedgehog enthusiasts, 13 Oct 2008

This review is from: Hedgehogs (Poyser Natural History) (Hardcover)
This is a book written by a leading researcher in the field, who also comes across loud and clear as a hedgehog enthusiast. It is full of readable science, and does not stint on the darker parts of a hedgehog's nature. The description of how hedgehogs eat small rodents is certainly not for the squeamish!

One of those satisfying books, where you come away feeling you know more about the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and readable, 17 Jan 2010
By Corgi Girl - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hedgehogs (Poyser Natural History) (Hardcover)
One of the book's strengths is the level of scientific detail provided- this is not about how to keep a hedgehog as a pet, but rather about how hedgehogs evolved, what characteristics make them unique, and how a 'typical' hedgehog's life unfolds. If you are fascinated by them as members of the animal world, this book provides solid background for understanding their roles- I've used it for reference multiple times.
