Our house is surrounded by trees, which is lovely, except it has meant our gutters have needed to be cleaned out every year as they invariably get clogged up and then overflow. This is probably no trouble if you are happy to go up a ladder and sort out the blockage but if you are wary of ladders, as I am, it proves to be a nightmare to find someone reliable who is able to sort it out for you.

My gutters have been fitted fairly close to the tiles and a strip was also inserted to prevent birds getting access to the loft when the house was built. This meant that I have struggled to get anything that would fit our gutter to stop leaves going in every year. The guards that are rolls of mesh, designed to fit onto the top of the gutter were no good for us because the tiles went too far into the gutter but also it was not possible to fit the guard to the house side of the gutter because of the bird mesh. I also tried the gadgets that are designed to slot into the top of the downpipe but, although these fitted, the leaves just piled up and blocked the gutter further back.

The hedgehog gutter guards do seem to be a proper solution - and they are very easily fitted by a man with a ladder - even in my problematic guttering! The only tools needed were a pair of wire cutters to cut the guard to the length of the gutter and a ladder to get it to the roof. You need to remove any existing leaves or other blockage and the hedgehog is then just pushed into the gutter - simple. The bristles do poke up above the top of the gutter and you can see them from the ground but you do soon forget they are there and it is a small price to pay for gutters that no longer get clogged with leaves. It is certainly worth trying if you are constantly plagued by gutters getting blocked up annually as we are.

I have bought several versions of this gutter guard for different sizes and types of gutter. All have been in place for at least two winters, so they have been well tested. This is also the third type of leaf guard I have used.

It definitely keeps the leaves out. However if you live in a wet, UK urban area with lots of overhead or nearby trees, then the leaves do not blow away and land somewhere else, they simply build up behind the projecting guard or worse, spike themselves on the guard itself. So the rotting leaves build up a solid mass above the hedgehog, on to which moss, grass & even tree seedlings grow, and the roof rainwater flows over the top of - and down the walls. The bottom row of slates or tiles stays permanents damp, and in one of my gutters, the bottom tile batten (treated timber) has been rotting away (with wet rot). I have now stripped out all my hedgehogs except the most inaccessible ones, to prevent this problem spreading.
The hedgehogs will also not prevent the urban deisel silt building up in the gutter (since this filters through) so your gutters will still silt up. You can strip them out and clean everything away, but if you thought that clearing out a typical gutter was a grubby job, you wait till you try stripping out a hedgehog (a full face visor is recommended).
The manufactuere recommends tying these hedgehoogs to your gutter at intervals, which is good advice if you want to avoid my expereience of finding them in the road after some high winds. However not all gutters can be looped round with a long cable tie or tough string - especially ogee gutters. And it you do tie them in, you will have to remove all these when you need to clean your gutters.
I have come to the conclusion that manually cleaning out the entire lengths of my gutters 3 times a year is much simpler than maintaining hedgehog guards.

The Guard was delivered in several layers of shrink-wrap and few sections of it had been subjected to some crushing. However, a bit of manipulation pretty well restored the shape and I don't think performance will be effected.

I had need to cut the 4m length - you'll not be able to do this with conventional wire-cutters as the core holding the bristles is of twin twisted steel wires and they are very tough. You could probably get through them it with a hacksaw but I used an old pair anvil tree loppers and that worked well.

Fitting is fairly easy though the stiff roof membrane which conducts rainfall into the gutters does mean that Guard is unlikely to fit as flat as the illustration shows. At first I was concerned that the bits sticking up at the end would catch the wind and blow the Guard from the gutter, but so far, in recent fairly stiff winds, this doesn't appear to be the case.

I've rated it 3* because without leaf-fall yet, it hasn't been put to the test. Secondly, I wonder whether a plastic core would give the Guard better flexibility and be much easier to cut if that is necessary. It also might reduce the cost from the current £3.86/m. However it looks promising and I'll update in due course.

July 2012 - Hedgehogs have been working hard and have come through with flying colours, as we had no blocked
downpipes. In my use, leaves and material backed up against the end of the hedgehogs (which is unlikely to be the case if I'd fitted them to the entire length of the gutter - pricey) but the debris was easy enough to clear, so overall I'm very pleased with the result.
