Yuri Norstein is a distinguished Russian animator and director, the creator of memorable and award-winning films. In 1984 his film 'Tale of Tales' was named The Best Animated Film of All Time in an event organised by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles with critics and filmmaker judges from all over the world. In 2002 this film was also named the best animated film of all time in a Zagreb International Animation Festival poll. In 2003, an international film jury in Tokyo declared 'Hedgehog in the Fog' to be the best animated film of all time. For his contributions to art Norstein received the Order of Arts and Letters (France, 1991), and the Order of the Rising Sun (Japan, 2004), as well as many Russian state and independent awards. Francesca Yarbusova is an award-winning artist, the wife and collaborator of Yuri Norstein. The successes of their films are as much her accomplishments as they are Norstein's. Gorgeous Gift 10 Dec. 2011
By Ms. S. E. Rushbrook - Published on

Got this for my nephew on the basis of Norstein being my favourite animator of all time. Yarbusova's drawings and Norstein's effects are as delightful as ever, in some ways seeing stills of this is such a treat because I am always so focused on the incredible sense of movement in Norsteins animations, the light effects and the fog too that I forget to take in all the details. The illustrations and pages are wonderfully big and the story itself has been beautifully condensed into something I think would make sense to kids of most ages. There is a depth of characterisation and an exploration of identity and the fear of the unknown in this which feels far more potent than the average children's story. Hedgehog and Bear are gentle creatures and their friendship has a genuinely touching quality to it. In the context of the fog all the other animals (both the threatening and the harmless ones) appear frightening but once hedgehog gives in and allows himself to be carried along in by the current he is rescued by one of these unknown creatures and carried back to safe familiar ground, and to the side of his good friend. I can't wait to give it to him for Christmas, I hope the story touches him as much as it did me and I can't wait until he's old enough to discover the animation. I wish I'd had this book to grow up with, I often feel like a hedgehog in the fog myself, even now.

great book 4 Dec. 2011

"Hedgehog in the fog" was created on the basis of a famous Russian cartoon by Norstein and Yarbusova, which is instantly recognized by any Russian. The illustrations are fantastic (I believe Miyazaki once said that he was inspired by Norstein), and the quality is excellent. The book exists both in Russian and English versions and is a great present for a child or an adult alike. We have all the books from the series, and my son, who is almost 5, loves them.

This is a great cartoon and illustrations by Francesca Yarbusova are a masterpiece. The book preserve the charm of the original cartoon by Norshtein. Illustrations dominate each page. My toddler is crazy about it, great quality book!

Brilliant in every way 4 May 2013

I'm not a parent, I almost never read to a small child. But, if that were among the pleasures in my life, I can imagine starting with this book.

As an adult reader, the imagery enthralls me. Realism, fantasy, and a child's response to the world carry equal weight on nearly every page. Our doughty hedgehog moves on, despite fears as much imagined as real, and deals with the physical facts of his hedgehog person (curling up in distress) honestly and easily.

But nothing ever becomes truly daunting. Things that seem scary turn out not to be, and friends emerge where least expected. Most of all, beginning middle and end, this story opens up the friendship of hedgehog and bear. And, in the quietest way I ever heard, it says "Good friends get you through it."

Art, story, and gentle nature - it's all what you might want in reading a child to sleep. Make no mistake, though, this offers panterly artwork to please a child or to challege a visual artist. As a non-child-to-reader, I found the story slight. As an uncle, godfather, and teacher, I give this my highest recommendation.

Beautiful Story 15 Feb. 2014

I grew up with the cartoon so I am probably partial, but my american-born husband, and my 2.5 year old kid love it as well. The book is done beautifully, and the story is just so sweet. We now read it to our son almost every night, and he's sharing the "Hedgehog in the Fog" story with his friends. So glad I found it!
