Product Description
Hedda Gabler, a deceased General's daughter marries dull George Tesman and foresees a life of middle class tedium stretching ahead when they return from a honeymoon they could not afford, to a house they cannot afford. Increasingly, she is drawn into the clutches of her admirer, Judge Brack, who seeks to establish a menage a trois. Then a former flame arrives in the brilliant but dissolute Eilert Lovborg to rival her husband for an academic post. After a drunken orgy, the manuscript of his treatise falls into her hands and she destroys it. Discovery traps her, her romantic ideas are shattered, and there seems only one way out of the net - the pistols of her father, the General.
About the Author
The Plays for Performance series is edited by Nicholas Rudall, former artistic director of the Court Theatre at the University of Chicago where he is professor of classics, and Bernard Sahlins, founder and director of the Second City. They both live in Chicago, Illinois.

As a student myself, I rate this edition of Ibsen's, "Hedda Gabler" very highly due to its great layout and invaluable commentary. The play itself is gripping, written in a comic style, although essentially a tragedy. For me, the play really came to life after reading the accompanying commentary. Details about all the characters' backgrounds and Ibsen's background help really put the play into context.
I truly recommend this edition to any student who might wish to study the play. I also highly recommend the play in general, as Ibsen's message is powerful in realising the social constraints people were faced with in the late 1800's (does this message still ring true today??).

The accompanying notes are great for students studying Ibsen. It's not about "what" the characters are saying, as much as what they are "thinking" while they're saying it!. I loved reading this play - couldn't put it down!

I love this book even though I haven't finished reading it but I was told about this play and Amazon came to my rescue! The price was too good to miss and plus the book is very handy to put into your handbag.
