It's kind of a "Best of..." I suppose, but the new fire in the these re-recordings is undeniable. It just makes me want to see them live now. I dare say a Saxon fan NEEDS to hear these versions just for reassurance. Saxon is in fine form... one listen to "Never Surrender" (track 11) and you're bound to agree.
Speaking of live: there is an "Official Bootleg" from Texas 2002 on the bonus disc which must be a board-tape. The quality is fine, but the mix leaves Biff's vocals up front with little more than drums at times. After a little bit of surprise (I guess I was expecting "Eagle Part 2" quality) my ears settled in and I like that disc as well.
A note to the suspicious: Yes, some of these recordings are the same ones that were included on the bonus disc of the "Killing Ground" limited edition release last year.
Die-hards, don't be afraid of Saxon tampering with their classics. If they breath new life into this material, it will only draw more fans into their fold for future new material... which would be a welcome offering considering the caliber of "Metalhead" and "Killing Ground."
I would definitely recommend this any day over some of their subsequent new material releases. Bonus CD is pants but it is a bonus so no loss.
If you have the originals and unless you absolutely must own all Saxon product, don't bother with this. There's nothing new here other than some awful (really awful) live tracks on the bonus CD.
Saxon are better than this.
