Product Description

A Heavy Chest of Dreamsby Emmy Culley Charting the incredible life of Sushana Culley on her voyage from sheltered childhood to pyrate queen, this enticing yarn unravels life-changing adventures many of which the author has based on personal experiences in her own extraordinary life. Living a dangerous but thrilling existence in the sixteenth century Shana had to adapt to a male-dominated society. Disguised as a boy, the young orphan moved unnoticed through squalid streets. Gruesomely accurate accounts of torture, murder and sex give the reader realistic experiences of Tudor times. Finding herself at sea on a ship captained by an abusive bully Shana cheated death, turning her life around. Living amongst a rough, all-male crew the determined wench rose to become the most feared pyrate captain of all time. Joining forces with Irish pyrate queen, Grace O'Malley, Shana declared war on the English slave trade and was charged with treason by Queen Elizabeth. With her multi-cultural pyrate crew she sailed the known seas building up a vast fortune but the shadow of the noose always threatened. During her bi-sexual life she enjoyed many lovers but endured agonizing rapes one of which resulted in the birth of her adored son Patrick.

From the Author

If you decide to buy my new book, `A Heavy Chest of Dreams' I hope that you will gain as much pleasure from reading it as I have writing it. Although I have always enjoyed writing short stories and poetry, penning a novel has been my dream project for many years.

I enjoy escapism through writing and my novel has helped me to face up to some of the trauma that I have faced in my life.

I do hope that you enjoy my raunchy, provocative and thrilling historical tale but be warned... `tis horrific in places!

A really riveting read 24 July 2008
Format:Paperback
This book is a real "must read". It gripped me from the very first page and it is one of those rare books which I just did not want to put down.

It is a very exciting adventure but the author has embellished the story with some excellent research into the period.

The characters are larger than life and this book provides a realistic portrayal of pirates and the way they lived.

It is quite a raunchy and violent tale in places but accurately describes people and relationships in Tudor times.

I was very pleased to finally get to read this tome and what an amazing gift for writing, Emmy Culley has. This is a chunky book about the female pyrate, Sushana Culley and the brutal world she gets to inhabit. This story is very well written by Ms Culley and it really informs the reader so well, as to help them soak up the atmosphere and feel of the times of Elizabeth I and everything that life of that period entails. Of course it is bawdy and quite savagely cruel at times, but that was the way of the world and this book is written with real depth, passion and understanding of that entire episode in British history, when there was the age of discovery for England and the acts of piracy, both by the hardened pirates and the legitimised Queen Elizabeth's explorers and plunderers of her own fleet. All of this leading to brutal deaths, slavery, acquisition of gold (and other riches) and the all empowering dominance over their captives. Life wasn't easy and Sushana becomes very successful at becoming a Pyrate Queen.

A well written book and one I would recommend!

A great read! 15 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
This is compulsive reading! From start to finish, the reader is taken on a voyage through the heroine's life that is filled with drama, tragedy, joy, pain, love, lust and passion. The captivating storyline is further enhanced by some amazingly detailed technical, historical, political and cultural research, which really brings the characters and events to life, and gives a thought provoking and disturbing insight into this period of history.
