You can't go wrong with Velvet Crush. That's all you need to know, really. Great tunes, great playing and, always, that undertow of melancholy.

A worthy follow-up ... 31 July 1998
By BBCWiHi - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
... to 1994's stellar "Teenage Symphonies to God," Velvet Crush's "Heavy Changes" was recorded in North Carolina in 1995. "Used To Believe" and "Ever After" are hard-rocking standouts, picking up on the formula from "Teenage ..." only with more extended jamming; producer Mitch Easter is again on hand to mix and play guitar. "White Satin Bed" is in the same mold as "Why Not Your Baby," a weepy country chestnut played with a syncopated Manchester drum lick. The band had high hopes for the disc but their label, Creation/Epic, didn't agree. Disappointed with sales to "Teenage ..." in the U.S. and unable to "find a single" out of the tracks on "Heavy," Creation/Epic rejected the album in 1996 and then dropped the band altogether. The tapes were shelved but later obtained by the band and released on their own label, Action Musik, in 1998. NOTE: Ric Menck disbanded the group sho! rtly after the band was dropped by Creation and moved to Los Angeles. Menck re-formed VC for a new album in 1998 with just bassist/lead vocalist Paul Chastain and VC chum Matthew Sweet, who is also producing.

Creeps into your CD player..again and again 21 Feb. 2000

Despite most people's reviews,I think this may be a bit better than the Crush's "Teenage..." in spots. The first half of the lp really rocks, and the lyrics hit right on..see "Fear of Flying" for an example. I definately reccomend this to fans of Teenage Fanclub, Baby Lemonade, RXH, etc.

As the title suggests, the Rhode Island trio decided to rev up the guitars a bit on this one-- think Badfinger's crunchier/ more rockin' power-pop (as opposed to the polished George-Harrison influenced stuff). And although there might be a little bit of guitar wankery here or there--two or three of the tunes wrap up with minute-long screechy solos-- the songs here are as catchy as anything from "Teenage Symphonies"; while I do enjoy the country-tinged offerings from that one (and other more stylistically diverse VC albums), the consistency of the sound on this collection pays dividends. Great cover art, too (one that merits owning on vinyl!).
