Not all angels are innocent...
It was the film that put Peter Jackson on the international film circuit. It was the film that rocketed Kate Winslet to fame. It was the film based on a crime that shocked a nation. Discover the grim and wonderful world of Heavenly Creatures.
Pauline is a student in New Zealand who has no affection for her family or her classmates, but when the beautiful and wealthy Juliet enrols at her school the pair become best friends. Through their shared tastes in art, literature, and music they begin to build an elegant fantasy world. However, when Juliet s parents threaten to separate the girls, they make a ruthless pact to preserve their fairytale forever, whatever the cost...
Starring Academy-Award winner Kate Winslet (Titanic), Melanie Lynskey (Up In The Air) and directed by Academy-Award winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Heavenly Creatures is a gripping and intelligent account of friendship with a dark edge.

Love, murder and the ethereal... a triumph worth revisiting.,

This review is from: Heavenly Creatures Remastered - Limited Edition [DVD] (DVD)
Of all Peter Jackson's films, there remains one that has never really sat comfortably in either of the two genres he is most famous for: fantasy and horror. Ultimately a classically grand love story with all the right ingredients a la 'Romeo and Juliet' (their love kept them apart, their fate was sealed) with elements of film noir (from the moment they met, it was murder), 'Heavenly Creatures' is that rare beast that refuses to conform to the audience's expectations. Indeed, at times it almost feels as though the film and the characters within it have whipped up such a fantastical frenzy that they will all combust in an explosion of excruciating song n' dance and bizarre 50's lingo. Instead, the movie decends into a very dark place before giving us that famous welter of gore, which to this day still shocks. A beautiful film and one-of-a-kind.The disc is presented beautifully, with classy packaging and a postcard set, while the image is crisp, the colours really rich. A huge improvement on the Canadian blu-ray release. As for the extras, we don't get the cut scenes alas, although this may have something to do with Jackson not liking them. However we do get a really insightful 30 minute documentary with three film critics, one of whom has many anecdotes relating to Jackson himself. Informative and entertaining. I enjoyed this return to Christchurch circa 1954 very much, and will do so again and again.

This review is from: Heavenly Creatures Remastered - Limited Edition [Blu ray] [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I received my Blu-ray copy of Heavenly Creatures on Tuesday - a great re-master! Both the picture and sound are extremely clear and the film sounded great on my Dolby Digital sound system. In addition to the beautiful packaging, I was extremely pleased to see four collector's postcards. When I originally read that this was getting a re-release on Blu-ray and DVD, I was expecting there to be all new extra features, including a director's commentary etc. I contacted the company (Peccadillo) to enquire into why this wasn't the case as I was disappointed that the only things listed were a trailer, a retrospective documentary and a picture gallery. This was the response I got: "Unfortunately we were not able to access any extra features (should they exist) from Wingnut (who produced the film). To make up for this we did the remastering from the original HD master (which had scratches that we re-scored), put together a trailer, a 30min featurette, a limited edition sleeve and a postcard set to make up for it. I understand that many people would have liked something more, but our hands were tied in that respect." In light of this, I was very pleased with the effort that went into creating extras. I recommend the retrospective documentary highly - some interesting insights to the film and Mr.Jackson himself! All in all - recommended

Remastered Edition Review,

Just to be 100% clear this is a review for the new Remastered Edition.Firstly this is one of the best presented Blu Ray's I have come across giving the slip cover, great sleeve design and high quality post cards included. While it's great to have this one Blu Ray I'm not sure how they can market it as a remastered version of the movie. The overall picture quality is very poor and appears to be up scaled from a low resolution source. I'm not sure how any one could have worked with this version of film, sat back and said to themselves 'yup, this is a good mastering job I've done'. Even worse, how did the transfer get approved for release? The Uncut DVD that has been around a number of years looks much cleaner, despite being low definition. The other big let down is that the Uncut version of the movie has not been included. Considering the movie is only taking up 7GB of the disc you would have thought the extra space could have been utilised, giving the user the choice between both versions. I'm considering trying the Uncut Blu Ray that is floating about to see out of curiosity, if it has a different print of the film.
