?The only link between Andy Warhol and J-Lo.? ?GQ, London, on David LaChapelle

About the Author

Barely out of high school, David LaChapelle was offered his first professional job by Andy Warhol to shoot for Interview magazine, and his career has gone steadily uphill since. LaChapelle has photographed the world's hottest celebrities for magazines ranging from Vanity Fair to Rolling Stone, Italian Vogue and i-D. His portraits and art photographs have been exhibited at the Staley-Wise, Toni Shafrazi, and Deitch Galleries in New York, the Fahey-Klein Gallery in California as well as internationally at Art Trend in Austria, Camerawork in Germany, Sozzani and Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Itay, and the Barbican Museum in London. LaChapelle has also directed music videos for artists such as Moby, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and The Vines. His burgeoning interest in film saw him make the short documentary Krumped, an award-winner at Sundance from which he developed RIZE, the feature film released worldwide in 2005 to huge critical acclaim. American Photo recently ranked him as one of the top ten "Most Important People in Photography." His limited-edition book LaChapelle, Artists & Prostitutes was also published by TASCHEN.

Format: Hardcover
A visionary in the great sense of the word, who can bring about dissonance in the lives of the rich and famous, who want to tell their stories without the kiss and tell sordid sensationalism. Here it is undertaken through a photographic narrative which aims to seduce and instruct at the same time. Delivered with the same intensity of colour and composure of Fellini and the Japanense cinematic eye, this is a big book. Whereas other authors concentrate upon the North European fixation, Lachalpelle is forever the tabu booster.

Here he takes black, Asian and white bodies, fashionistas and film stars to unravel their psyches and say something about the world in the various sets he has composed. Some are just surreal and others take an eye to trans-sexaulity, inter racial sex, threesome visions along with the body shape and the eternal composure of desire. It is a Warholian world of the super rich who plunder bodies and dreams into shapes which only money can contort them.

Andy Warhol said that his idea of a good picture is one that's in focus and of a famous person. Heave to Hell is loaded with good pictures, in focus and of famous people.

Jokes appart, Lachapelle is an excellent photographer, with a style of his own. You can tell if a picture is his just at first sight. He has created a Barbie like world with tons of intense colours, plastic skin, cosmetic surgery...

The format of the book is great too. Large sized so you can see the pictures in detail. Besides, it comes in a box that allows you to keep the book in perfect condition.

If you want to see the best pictures of one of the best photographers you should see Heaven to Hell.

Bought this book for my friend, whom, also a photographer, is a huge fan of David LaChapelle. When I gave it to her and we sat down to look through it and admire it (in the middle of a busy shopping centre may not have been the best place for this, haha) we immediately fell in love all over again, what a book!

Seems like a fitting title for this book. It is higly controversial, but also a masterpiece in it's own sense.
David LaChapelle has himself said "If you want reality, take the bus." If that spikes your curiosity then this book is for you.

If you dare to put it on the coffeetable, on the other hand..
