Book Description

2 Nov 2010
A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back A young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven. 'Heaven Is for Real' is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear. Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how 'reaaally big' God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit 'shoots down power' from heaven to help us. Told by the father, but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heaven is for Real 20 Jan 2012
This e-book was provided to me for free courtesy of the BookSneeze programme.

I have to say that I wasn't sure whether I was going to like Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo with Lynn Vincent. It's the story of Burpo's son's visions of heaven in the context of a life-threatening episode of appendicitis when he was only four years old. And I wasn't sure I was going to like it because unfortunately this genre tends to attract rather colourful stories of unlikely visions, many of which can't be substantiated in Scripture or which seem to have led to pride or even subtle twisting of faith in the writer.

So it was to my great delight to find that this book is, in some ways, different. Burpo, a pastor, tells how the story of his son's visions came out only over time and in small parts. As he and his wife began to realise that something had happened to their son, they began to ask him questions about the experience; and so it is that we have in this book the details of some of what Colton Burpo saw. Most importantly for me, Todd Burpo - as a pastor who loves his Bible - was keen to test how the things his son claimed to have seen measured up with Scripture and would even try to trick his son with questions to see whether his son would affirm things about his experience of heaven which the Scriptures expressly deny!

As someone who has a healthy - even extreme? - tendency towards cynicism regarding this genre, I found this book incredibly faith-enhancing in fact. There were a handful of things which Colton claims to have seen that I don't think can be substantiated from Scriptural accounts of heaven and which sound a little far-fetched. But then...nor does Scripture expressly deny those things either!

I have to say I was pretty sceptical about this book "heaven is for real" by Todd Burpo and I have read critiscm regarding this book before I opened the first page which probably did not help. When I started to read this book,I was overwhelmed by the accounts of this four year old's visit to heaven and by what he had encountered there in such a short space of time. This book answers questions regarding heaven, death and the after-life in short clear answers from a little boy who gives his account of his visit over a period of a few years.

I am a new Christian and I have found this book very difficult to put down and have read it over a couple of days and I just found it so enthralling and I have found it hard to put this book down. I would recommend this book to anyone and even to an unbelievers eyes, this book would be very difficult not to love let alone find it hard to question Jesus etc.

I am so looking forward to heaven and to seeing Jesus and God but I am so looking forward to experiencing a closer walk with Jesus in my own life whilst I am here on this earth.

This is a book through a child's eyes and an account that is so accurate and true that who could find this hard not to believe and yes, scripture backs up this little boy's experiences whilst in hospital. Whether this little boy actually died, we dont really know.

If you havent read this book, I would highly recommend it and trust me this will bring you close to Jesus, God and The Holy Spirit without a shadow of a doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heaven is for real 29 Oct 2012
By R. Horn
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Read this relatively quickly. I believe in God and heaven so was pleased to read about the little boys experience but I did feel the book was a bit padded out as there wasn't an awful lot of story from the little boy, more padding about the families reaction to the story, but that is fine. I still enjoyed it.

This is MUST read!! I read it in two hours, so it's an easy read. It's a true story of a three year old boy who has an out of body experience and goes to heaven and back. Absolutely astounding, and essential reading for anyone who is curious about heaven. He's three so he says what he sees. Definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death of a child? A look behind 'the door'. 30 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When a not quite 4 year old child accurately describes things that are impossible for him to know, his parents (and the readers) are gripped not only by what he has to share, but by what this means for all of us. Colton's father tells the unfolding story of events that took place that threatened their family on so many levels as his own health and then his son's took major hits. Anyone who has faced the loss of a child, suffered the loss of pre-born or newborn, or had to look death in the face for themselves will be ministered to by this simple hearted account of a powerful, personal God who is sovereign over the events of our lives.
Only one minor detail in his description leaves me questioning what he actually saw. Not enough to discredit the account by any means.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not one for the sceptics 19 Feb 2012
In an extensive survey conducted by Gallup in 1981, eight million people claimed to have had a near-death experience (N.D.E.). Of course, such figures are highly controversial, but even if we assume 99% of these claims are unfounded, hallucinatory or hoax we'd still have 80,000 cases to explain.

My point is this: NDEs seem to be a relatively common phenomenon. However you choose to explain them (or explain them away, if you're a materialist), there is definitely something going on here that needs investigating.

If you're going to pick one particular NDE to write an entire book about, then it would be sensible to pick one that was among the more convincing. Some of the criteria that you might be looking for are:

1. The subject's account contains verifiable details of events that occurred whilst the subject was unconscious or pronounced clinically dead. Ideally, these details will be verified by a relatively impartial person, such as a nurse or doctor.

2. The subject relates the experience in their own words.

3. The account is recorded (written down or taped) as close to the NDE occurrence as possible so as to prevent memory loss or embellishment over time.

4. The account is placed in some context or comparison with other NDE accounts.

These criteria might seem a bit limiting, but given the number of NDEs experienced it shouldn't be too hard to find some that fulfil all these characteristics. Indeed, there are many recorded instances that do match these criteria, many involving children.

So, how does `Heaven Is For Real' stand up to these criteria?
