Book Description

17 Mar 2011
Paris, 1968. Four young hopefuls are following their dreams, making their way in the ruthless world of haute couture. Seamstress Monique, standing with her tatty suitcase in hand, watches shop assistants spray Chanel No. 5 in the street outside Coco's world-famous store. Can all her dreams come true in this magical place? Christopher, London born and bred, the handsome up-and-coming designer is determined to leave his mark on the city where glamour and power go hand in hand and every man has a mistress. Samantha, the daddy's girl with an uncanny eye for PR, understands what sells-- sex, sex and more sex. But can a loud, brash American ever conquer the sophisticated wives of Paris? And hauntingly beautiful Sophie, the top model with her face in a thousand magazines and the world at her feet, has a secret in her past that won't stay buried...

4.0 out of 5 stars A lil bit of the fashonista 15 July 2010
Format:Paperback
My Grandma never left me alone when I told her I had a Harold Carlton book for review 'oh I love him....my favourite book of his is Labels...oh once I picked it up I couldn't put it down' she went on and as my nan has never been wrong about a great author I trusted her word and waited until the girls where away so I could start reading!

Harold Carlton manages to combine his inside knowledge of fashion with the brilliantly described main characters at the same time as throwing in humour and atmosphere which perfectly evokes Paris at the time. The story is set in the late sixties going in to the seventies. It is a stunning portrayal of what life in retro, post-war, pre-seventies hippie must be like. I was amazed with this unexpected read which felt like a tribute to the legendary Mademoiselle Chanel. It left me comparing notes with the history of her, although some facts are changed the basic idea of how Chanel must be like, and how a fashion house operates are convincingly real.

Overall I agree with my Grandma Harold is a great writer but this novel wasn't for me I felt it was a little too long even though I enjoyed the characters and the plot there where many parts I found myself skimming across. I do recommend this book to anyone with a love for Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada it is a 'Fashionista read'(and believe me when I say I'm no fashionista I just LOVE The Devil Wears Prada).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I have read for ages 26 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Buy this book! I have read every one of Harold Carlton's books since the seventies and this must be the best.
He manages to combine his inside knowledge of fashion with the brilliantly described main characters at the same time as throwing in humour and atmosphere which perfectly evokes Paris at the time. I was there so I know.
It is such an entertaining read and the suspense keeps going right up to the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read... 13 May 2010
Format:Paperback
At last a book that gives an amazing insight into the world of fashion whilst telling a gripping story. I couldn't put it down. I particularly enjoyed the atmospheric ride around Paris and the world of haute couture was certainly revealed. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. A fantastic book that resonates.

5.0 out of 5 stars PAGE-TURNER FOR FASHION LOVERS 12 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a really splendid book - Paris in the 60s and a rollicking sexy tale set in the world of haute couture. The author was the only Englishman working in high fashion in Paris and he really knows the world he writes about. It's impossible to put down and I recommend it to anyone looking for a great escapist read that's a cut above chick-lit.

2.0 out of 5 stars And they wore........? 4 July 2012
Format:Paperback
A story set in the sixties. In Paris. In the fashion industry. No, the haute couture business no less. At a time when the traditional Chanel suit was being replaced with 60s mini skirts and plastic clothes. When the young took over fashion from the old. When traditions were overturned and exciting new trends were popping like champagne corks. What a fantastic setting. So... WHERE ARE THE CLOTHES? Almost no descriptions at all either of the beautiful couture, hand-stitched classics made of rich fabrics or the new, exciting geometric shapes and modern fabrics that came after them. Such a wasted opportunity.

Some of the little vignettes seemed so real that the author seems to know the fashion business of that time, but I found it very frustrating and disappointing not to be able to visualise the garments that these four people had such a passion for. Fashion was their life, in their blood, or so we are told, so it's extraordinary that the author focuses more on what they are eating than what they are designing or making or modelling. We hear that one of the characters is given the chance to stage his own cat walk show - a career-changing opportunity. He spends large amounts of time designing the clothes, then there is a description of the show. And what were the clothes like? No idea, there is almost nothing about them.

So really this is just a story about 4 young people finding their way in their first jobs, growing up, having some success, making some mistakes, falling in love, just like so many other novels. Well that's the first half of the book anyway. Don't know what happened after that. Life's too short to waste on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it 15 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
Who cares if your plane is delayed--as long as you've remembered to buy this book. The writing is as sharp as a Chanel jacket. Over the top romance and sadly true-to-life designer madness, makes for a sparkling and seductive read, written by a fashion insider who knows his stuff. And knows Paris, too.
