This one embraces his complete recordings from 1961 to 1963, an era in which R&B was morphing into soul at a rapid rate. Many of the tracks here show just how well equipped Willie would have been to handle the new style had his career not been truncated by imprisonment for manslaughter in 1964.
This end of Willie's King catalogue has been less well represented on CD in the past, and so a good many of these tracks have never appeared in digital format before.
An extensive sleeve note, which covers both the era of this CD and the sad end to his life, is complemented by a beautifully illustrated booklet.
Will appeal to both long term LWJ fans and those who have become aware of his excellence via Ace's previous CD issues:
EARLY KING SESSIONS: CDCHD 846
THE KING SESSIONS 1958-1960: CDCHD 1061
NINETEEN SIXTY SIX: CDKEND 305

Little Willie bliss,

The beauty of this final CD in Ace's 'complete' King sessions is it contains tracks that have previously been very hard to get hold of, either on vinyl or CD, from his last sessions for the label, while also containing some far more familiar beauties. While some of the numbers may not be 'up there' as far the Little Willie reportoire is concerned, overall it makes you think just what a force he could have become in the emerging soul music world had his life not taken such a tragic turning. My only, relatively minor, gripe is the version of Fever with added strings is missing but I can understand how some may find the 'remix' unnecessary. A must for all lovers of fine old R'n'B!

Disappointed,

I have learnt a lesson from the purchase of this CD - one man's R'n'B is another man's pop. I agree Mr John has a good voice but the arrangements would not be out of place on a Bobby Vee or early Drifters recording (or even twist). I expected a raw earthy R&B/Soul crossover not a black songster singing for the 60's white pop market. Of course there are some reasonable tracks here but there are a lot of fillers. The recording quality is not exceptional- Willie's voice often distorts at top notes. His influences would appear to be Sam Cooke and a young Ray Charles but their songs are far better in staying power. By 1963 these songs would have been old fashioned in their arrangements which is probably why he did not feature prominently up to his incarceration. There were artists who were more popular and had better songs - competition was tough. It's a pity - with better material his talent may have shone through stronger. Maybe "1966" is a better album?
I would suggest that if you are considering purchasing this album try to listen to some of the tracks. Perhaps "nostalgia" albums should carry a health warning: "this album contains mediocrity". By the way if you are tempted to buy his sister's (Mable John) album, again listen first.
