Product Description

Product Description
Heath Ledger was one the most charismatic and powerful screen presences of his generation. Having established a high-profile acting career by the age of 21 with the lead in 'A Knight s Tale', the young Australian went on to pursue a succession of increasingly diverse and often subversive roles that challenged the film industry s initial impression of him as a mere teen-idol. While a limited number of his early roles would hint at the greatness of which he was capable, it was not until his melancholy, Oscar-nominated performance in Ang Lee s modern classic 'Brokeback Mountain' that Heath proved beyond question the blistering extent of his abilities and secured his place amongst the Hollywood elite, bringing to this new status a depth of artistry absent in all but the most accomplished of his contemporaries. His sudden death at the age of 28 rocked the film industry to its core, created an international media storm, and threw a poignant shadow over the completed body of work that has now become his legacy. This book explores Heath s relationships with actresses Heather Graham, Naomi Watts, and Michelle Williams (his ex-fiancée and the mother of his daughter Matilda), recounts the full story of the making of 'Brokeback Mountain', and details that film s subsequent impact. It charts Ledger s increasingly troubled state of mind as the role of the Joker in 'The Dark Knight' took a disturbing physical and psychological toll, and examines the dissatisfaction with his own performances that plagued him until the very end. 'Heath Ledger: Hollywood s Dark Star' is the definitive story of the life and times of a compelling and intense young man whose loss will be profoundly felt for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accessible and enjoyable, 16 Jul 2008
By Skyler (Bucks, UK) - See all my reviews
The best part of this book is the photographs it contains of Heath Ledger. It could be a photo album of the actor's life. There are tonnes of pictures of him from throughout his career but the best ones are of him as a child in Oz, participating in school productions and generally having a laugh. The text is very simply written, the kind of thing a reluctant reader might find accessible, and gives a good overview of Heath's life but, for me, it's worth having for the pictures alone!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 6 Jul 2008

I couldn't wait to preorder this item. Having seen Heath Ledger in Black Rock some years ago I became a huge fan and followed his career to its sad end. I found this book to be a big letdown. It reads at times like it was rushed off the presses just to cash in on the new Heath Ledger market. One thing that puts me off books is simple mistakes, these include an obvious spelling mistake early on and someones sister being described as their brother. Basically, very sloppy work by the editors. In addition, the book is great at describing the career of Ledger but doesn't really delve into Ledger the man. His career can be googled, I was hoping to discover more. On the plus side, the pictures inside are great and I learnt little things I didn't know such as he appeared in the soap 'Home and Away'. However, I want more from my books then a few great pictures and someones career highlights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, 16 Jul 2008
I'm a huge Heath Ledger fan and bought this in the run up to 'The Dark Knight'. I thought the book was a very moving portrait of Heath Ledger. Brian Robb has done a lot of research and you can tell that although Heath definitely took himself seriously, he was an actor that who trying to gain success on his own terms and to lead a happy, fulfilling life. There are also an amazing amount of pictures in the book, including some especially sad ones of him as a little boy and on-stage at the very start of his career in school productions. I think that anyone who is a Heath fan and wants to learn more about him would do well to start here.
