Product Description

During an oppressive Iowa summer of drought and farm foreclosures, widowed Maggie Anderson makes a bold decision: She’ll merge her love of horses and her family’s three hundred and twenty acres into a horse farm and try her hand at nearby Prairie Meadows Race Track, where racing purses have just been augmented by the recently added casino gambling.

Down on his luck after being falsely accused in a racing scandal and banned from training, former Arlington Race Track trainer Ed Harrington has skulked home to Des Moines to drown his sorrows and wait for the dust to clear. He’s unprepared for the piercing robin’s-egg-blue eyes of pint-sized Maggie Anderson, who finds him at a flophouse and offers him a job. Can he pull himself together and meet the challenge?

As the two forge a tumultuous working partnership, they soon discover someone is out to get Maggie’s farm and will stop at almost nothing to force her off the land. Can they find and stop the culprit before someone is killed? Can they survive the far greater danger unleashed by the raw passion simmering just beneath the surface of their relationship?

5.0 out of 5 stars More than Romantic Suspense 28 May 2014
By Jada Ryker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
How do you make a million dollars in the equine industry? Start with two million dollars and get out before it's too late!

Maggie decides to build a racing stable. She is smart enough to know she doesn't have all of the skills and abilities to implement her plan. She decides to "track" down Ed Harrington. As she looks for Ed, the last words of her friend are echoing in her head: "This guy may be too much for you to handle."

Ed's fall from grace was fast and hard. His previous life was filled with "fast racehorses and faster women". Now, he's banned from many race tracks. He's a shambling mess, shaking with alcoholic tremors.

Maggie and Ed recognize one thing in one another: grief.

Adriana Kraft's Heat Wave (Riders Up) is more than a delightfully well-written and entertaining romantic suspense. It's also a heartwarming story of hope and second chances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ed is a revelation 1 May 2014
By Sheila Gallagher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Ed has lost his place in the racing world because of a gambling scandal. He is down and out, drinking more than living. Maggie Anderson is in need of his skills in the racing world to start a racing horse stable and breeding program. She finds him but will it be worth it? Not only is she gambling on her and her children's future, she's gambling that Ed can clean himself up and help her. To add to her burden someone is trying to get her land and will stop at nothing to do it including murder if necessary. Who is it and why do they want her small farm?

Wow! I love how Adriana Kraft has remade Ed into a likable character. At the end of Cassie's Hope Ed was a player and a jerk. Now Ed has grown up and become the man he had been hiding from the world. He's not a sweetheart but he has become humble and sees the world from the bottom of the pile. He decides he can, and will, change. He misses the racing world. He misses the track. He knows even though he is helping Maggie build a stable and teaching her and her children that he still cannot go to the track. But he will do his best by her. He makes a commitment to her and keeps it.

I like Maggie. She is strong and often gets her way. Her children, Carolyn and Johnny, are good kids. They are starting their teen years and need a man around. Johnny worships Ed and takes the lessons Ed teaches to heart. When he gets hurt, he is so afraid that Ed will no longer allow him around the horses. Carolyn also tries to use her feminine wiles on Ed and he acts just like a father. I love how it leads to a mother-daughter talk between Carolyn and Maggie. There is an openness and honesty between them that is wonderful.

Maggie does not hide her attraction to Ed. He is freaked by it and runs away but eventually remembers his commitment to the stable and returns where they have a talk and a truce. The heat between them still simmers though.

When troubles arise on the farm Maggie is ready to let Ed go so he is not injured by the troubles. Ed will not go. He plays the protector whether Maggie wants it or not. There are times when I wanted to smack Maggie up along side her head. Her trust in Ed is low. His trust isn't much higher but he does trust her more than she trusts him. Fortunately she had her daughter and her brother to point out the error of her ways.

Heat Wave is an excellent continuation of the series. I loved Ed and Maggie. I loved what they built with the farm and their love. Cannot wait for book 3.

What I simply loved from reading 'Heat Wave'

This was a story of two people who were in need of something...for Maggie not losing her family farm and taking care of her two children and for Ed after being falsely accused of cheating was band from racetracks had turned to the bottle (alcohol). How these authors were able to bring it all together was really turned out to be a awesome read. I really enjoyed how Maggie was a go getter not letting anyone stop her from what was important of her. Ed with his personal problems had only tried to drown his sorrow away but after being offered a job would this give him something else to think about? It was very interesting seeing these two people learn to trust each other and even more for one of the Maggie's children to see that one of these people really could be trusted.

The characters in 'Heat Weave' were really off the chart good...there were many showing to be well developed, rounded, colorful, believable and all in all being down right well portrayed giving the reader one fantastic read with many twist and turns. One of my favorite characters other than Maggie and Ed was Ben Templeton. I will stop there not wanting to give too much away.

"Heat Wave" was definitely one of those reads that will be hard to put down because these authors has given the reader such a intriguing and captivating mystery read of who is trying to get Maggie's property. I found myself laughing out loud at some parts of the read to even becoming very intense with other parts leaving me wondering what and who had caused that situation to have happened. But in the end...well this will be the time to say you will have to pick up the good read to see how it will be brought out to you.

My overall view:

"Heat Wave" by Adriana Kraft was not only one well written researched read but if you are into horse racing this is a read for you. This read was definitely one of those that will give you a lots of information not only the love of horse racing but also the inside track of it all. Very well done to the authors!

I received an Pdf copy from the author for purpose of an honest review and was not compensated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story 29 April 2014
By amy bowens - Published on Amazon.com

The story of Maggie and Ed was well written. Each had a hard road ahead of them. Maggie facing the possibility of losing her family's farm and Ed who was banned from racetracks and the racing industry due to being falsely accused of cheating. Both handle problems differently . Maggie is a go getter who will never give up the fight while Ed is drowns his sorrows in cheap alcohol. Somehow fate throws them together. Neither one of them trust in themselves or each other until it is almost to late. Someone wants Maggie to fail and for her to lose her farm and they will do anything to and everything to see this happen!
I felt like I was on a roller coaster reading this story! Laughing one second, then felt like crying the next, always on the edge wanting to know what is going to happen next. I loved the characters Maggie and Ed they worked so well together in the story ,their chemistry just flowed through the story! I also loved that Cassie and Clint were included into the story.
The story is so well written and you can tell that the story was well researched about racing and the horse industries . To me that makes the story just that more interesting!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heat Wave - good summer read, or anytime of the year read! 1 Jun 2014
By Cheryl Rhodes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Heat Wave follow the typical romance formula - boy meets girl, they encounter difficulties, looks like the relationship ends, and then they pull it together.

Maggie is looking for other ways to make her farm more profitable and decides to go into the racing business, with no prior experience, and not living especially close to any racetrack (Iowa is not well known for running big time Thoroughbred horse races). An old family friend tells her to try to track down Ed, a former racehorse trainer, who lost his license after some kind of wagering scandal. He'll be able to help her get a racing stable together, that is if he can stop hitting the bottle.

Ed sobers up, comes to live on Maggie's farm with her 2 kids, and horse by horse they put together a stable with some horse racing with a trainer in Chicago, some broodmares, 2 year olds, and yearlings.

The heat wave part of the title comes into play because there's no rain that summer and due to the drought most of the farmer's crops have died, including Maggie's. But not to worry - fortunately she bought crop insurance. Kind of makes you wonder why the other farmers didn't too. Ed disappears a couple of times, scared off by Maggie's seductress routine, and each time is the victim of foul play. Who is behind Ed getting beat up, the murder of a barn cat, and arson?

No one's going to scare Maggie Magee off her farm.

Or will they?

The book is well written, good dialogue, good storylines, but I think it might be a little on the boring side for readers who don't already have a strong interest in horses and horseracing.
