Robert De Niro and Al Pacino face off as thief and policeman, both obsessed with their professions. De Niro stars as Neil McCauley, the criminal mastermind in a gang of professional thieves (which includes Tom Sizemore and Val Kilmer), who unwittingly attract the attention of super-cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino). Hanna will not stop until he catches the gang in the midst of committing a crime, an obsession that alienates him from those he is close to.

Theres not much I can add to what has already been said. However if by some miracle you've missed this film over the last 12 years then here is a quick overview of one of the best crime movies ever made.

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro star as respectively dedicated cop and master criminal. Pacino as Cop Vincent Hanna is so dedicated that he neglects his family and his 3rd marraige is falling apart. DeNiro as Neil McCauley is a man who is prepared to walk away from any relationship in order to maintain his criminal lifestyle. Many people have asked who is the better actor is this film. Well lets be clear here both are excellent, and I like both actors, they are amongst the best who ever lived. For my money though DeNiro steals it in perhaps his last great performance. Pacino just overplays his part just a little bit which allows me to give it to DeNiro - but only just.

The remainder of the cast are excellent and Michael Mann directs with his usual skill. Some of the action sequences in this film are brilliantly done. I recently saw Mission Impossible III, which has some impressive action sequences in it but they aren't in the same league as the ones in this film. Why? Because Heat does not rely on CGI effects and the camerawork is vastly superior. Furthermore action sequences do not need to contain explosions every 30 seconds to make them work.

The extras on this version are pretty good. There are the usual selection of documentarys and an audio commentary. However the main reason to buy this is the film. Its quite long at 164mins but you will find that it passes very quickly - always the sign of a good film.

I'll 'fess up to by biggest prejudice about this movie: I love Al Pacino. Whether the crazy poor Cuban immigrant to America become drug king (Scarface) or the good cop searching for a killer (Insomnia), he almost always gives a performance worthy of an Academy Award. (Why doesn't he have more than own award?)

In this movie with de Niro, we again see the cop that will stop at nothing to get his prey. "I'm gonna bring you down," [paraphrase] he says to de Niro in their own cinematic scence to date (which only lasts a few minutes).

One of the best movies of the police genre I've ever seen. Great screenplay, great supporting actors like Val Kilmer and Ashley Judd. And the 2 disc special edition is definitely worth it for the interviews with the stars and staff.

Five Stars! Six Stars! Whatever is the maximum ultimate rating! When they go looking of the last great cinematic Crime Drama of the 20th Century and one of the great cinematic Crime Dramas of all time, they'll find the incredible motion picture "Heat". Film Noir in color! Michael Mann pulled out all of the stops: a fantastic film, fantastic script, fantastic directing, great music, and one of the greatest casts in motion picture history.

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, John Voight, Tom Sizemore, Wes Studi, Mykelti Williamson, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Danny Trejo, Kevin Gage, William Fichtner, Jeremy Piven, Hank Azaria, Xander Berkely, Henry Rollins, Natalie Portman, Tone-Loc and a great cameo by Dennis Haysbert among others. Whew, what cast! (How much was the casting budget?). Together they push this movie along in such a frenetic, mesmerizing manner that one wishes it could have gone on for hours. The film includes an incredible, spine-tingling shootout in the middle of Los Angeles that makes the OK Corral look like child's play. And the almost obligatory scene between De Niro and Pacino in the diner is a real hoot! Michael Mann outdid himself with this incredible movie about a determined group of gangsters up against an equally-determined group of cops in modern day Los Angeles. Great character development and brisk plot acceleration just make it all the more BREATHTAKING. One of Hollywood's greatest films!! Five MAXIMIZED STARS!!
