Book Description

4 Feb 1999
Born Jalaluddin Mohammad Balki in Persia in 1207, the poet known as Rumi (named after the city where he lived) composed works of mysticism and desire that inspired countless people in his own time and throughout the centuries. He led a relatively conventional life until, at about the age of thirty-seven, he met the wandering Sufi dervish and mystic Shams of Tabriz, and a fast friendship took shape. From his relationship with Shams, Rumi's teachings and poetry were changed forever. Rumi died in 1273. Though he is revered and respected in the East, today -- through the translation of his work into English -- his poems and teachings have found a new and receptive audience in the West.

The magnificence of Rumi's poetry has heartened the faith of people worldwide for more than seven hundred years, and William Guion's spiritual photographs of oak trees are a perfect visual complement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Poetry! 8 Dec 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I loved this book - the poetry is simple and fresh, yet inspiring. It is hard to believe Rumi lived in the 1200's. His work really makes you ponder life (whether or are religious or not).

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly endearing gift book, thoughtful, reverential. 31 Dec 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
by Frederick and Mary Ann Brussat -- from the web site.

This truly beautiful gift book contains duotone photographs by William Guion of Southern live oaks. He has been reverencing them in his native Louisiana for more than 15 years. In the introduction, Guion refers to the spiritual significance of oaks to Greeks, Celts, and Native Americans. He appreciates them a wise elders and profound spiritual teachers. Guion's evocative photographs reveal how the trees seem to draw out and convey the spirit of a place whether standing in state parks, plantations, or gardens. There are oak alleys, oaks caught in the diffuse haze of early morning, oaks with branches intertwining in the shadows, solitary oaks poised like sentries in the middle of fields. The light as it plays on the branches and illuminates the areas around the oaks is another theme worth your attention. Alongside these oaks are 30 brief poems by the Sufi mystical poet Rumi, with translations by poet Coleman Barks in collaboration with Persian scholar John Moyne. Guion, who has been a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for almost 20 years, has perfectly matched these poems and the varied trees with themes such as longing, love, mystery, gratitude, eternity sacredness, and silence. Our favorite, a leaning oak reflected in a pond-it appears on the hardcover jacket of our book "Spiritua Literacy"--is complemented by a Rumi quatrain including the lines "Turn as the earth and the moon turn, / circling what they love." This enchanting book draws a bead on the deep connection between nature and the soul's delight. It would make a wonderful gift for any lover of trees or poetry. Guion lives in Utah where he is working on future book projects utilizing his photographs and writing.

I have this book on my coffee table. This artist takes wonderful photographs of Loisiana's oak trees. Looking forward to his next book. I have five of this artist photographs hanging and the book is a beautiful compliment to them when people ask about the artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book. Fantastic Pictures. 24 May 2010

Don't be fooled by the prices. This is not a coffee table book. It measures about 6x7 inches. The pictures are fantastic though and they are accompanied nicely by excerpts from Rumi.
