What a completely wonderful book! Alison Carter is a realistic representation of every woman, in that she's not a perfect size 2, she goes on a LOT of bad (hilarious) dates, drives a Toyota, and has a regular job. She's not being chased by bad guys, she's not an heiress with no concern for money, and she's not a brilliant scientist with evidence that could put away the mob. She drinks too much occasionally (don't we all!) and then deals with the hangover, she's been friends with the same person since junior high, and her father is a pain in the butt. What makes Alison such a wonderful character, in my opinion, is her ability to fall off the horse again and again and get back up - again and again, each time with a renewed sense of optimism. Alison believes the best in everyone. As much as it hurt my heart each time hers was broken, it made me wish I could be a little more like her.
Brandon is also a very realistic character; he's no millionaire with secret James Bond-like abilities who will swoop in at the last minute and save the girl. He's a good-looking guy, a hard worker with a hard past, he's been affected (like all of us) by the bad economy, and he has a plan to make some quick cash to finance his next real estate deal. His plan is a little flawed (a guy running a matchmaking service??), but it's a good plan - until he meets Alison. Brandon's repeated attempts to set her up with Mr. Right made me laugh out loud. Alison's recaps of her dates were just priceless!
Heartstrings and Diamond Rings was well worth the price and the time spent reading it.
I need another Jane Graves novel - fast!
