A must have unique albumn!!!

This album is in my top ten for 2006 and a must for those who enjoy rich
lyrical content. It's a concept album centering on the themes of
dislocation, isolation, and travels. The songs are dark mind you but true stories. Rykarda's style has been compared to Faulkner and Kerouac.
Musically and vocally Rykarda is like a cross between Lauren Bacall and Nick Cave. She has a smoky voice and knows better than to over sing. There are moments when the band reminds me of the Velvet underground and Johnny Cash however. The lyrics are good enough to stand alone, but the stories are fleshed out with Rykarda's wide vocal range as well as with the music itself. I found myself drifting into the tales and being able to see the characters and scenery just as I would with a good book.

If Lucinda Williams and Edgar Allan Poe had a baby that baby would be Rykarda Parasol... okay, kind of a nutty point, but at least more biologically possible than all those "if Nick Cave and Johnny Cash had a baby" ones. In any event this is great great music with highlights including "arrival, a rival" and "night on red river", and goodness gracious "hannah leah" is just outstanding. Listen to the preview snippet of "hannah leah", and if those haunting backing vocals don't grab you then move on, but if you like that tune then buy this album and wear it out.
