A superb tribute from one legendary vocalist to another,
By Classic Vocals Fan "soease" (Chingford, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heart's Desire - A Tribute to Doris Day (Audio CD)
Any occasion when Sue Raney returns to the recording studio is a real treat and this stunning album is no exception.
In superb voice (as clear and controlled as ever) Ms Raney pays tribute to the one and only Doris Day with her own interpretations of 13 of her famous songs mainly from her Warner Bros film years. There is also an additional newly composed title track. The album was recorded at Capitol Studio A with the orchestra arranged and conducted by Alan Broadbent. This is the same studio where Sue recorded her first album, at the age of 17, with Nelson Riddle. Every track is a highlight but if I had to pick a standout, it would have to be 'My Dream Is Yours' which sends shivers down the spine. What a fantastic way to celebrate 50 years as a recording artiste! Here's hoping more albums follow from this superlative singer.

The Return of a Master,
By Daniel Pure - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Heart's Desire - A Tribute to Doris Day (Audio CD)
What a shame Sue Raney sang when she did! Born too late for one generation and too soon for another, were she singing TODAY at the height of her talent, she would easily be a superstar among female vocalists. Her uncanny ability to interpret a standard, her phrasing and magnificent voice control easily put her on a par with Frank Sinatra and that is no exaggeration. If you are fortunate to pick up a copy of her out of print CD "Quietly There" with the Bob Florence Group, listen especially to "Unless It's You" to hear a perfect rendition of that Johnny Mandel song.
So now we have the long-awaited tribute to Doris Day. This album is nothing short of a masterpiece and a loving tribute to Doris Day it truly is. You would never know Sue is now singing in her sixties. I have always disliked Que Sera, Sera but Sue makes this song so compelling that I have listened to it over and over again. Every cut on this album is a showpiece to this wonderful singer's magnificent ability. Perhaps with this album, Sue Raney will finally receive the recognition she so richly deserves. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful:

SUPERB,

A superb offering from a superb artist. She records far too infrequently, so I hope this CD signals an increase in output!
Sue Raney is my favorite singer. I have every CD shown on Amazon, some 16. That's not enough. Call me a glutton. |
