Synopsis

Nora Ephron's autobiographical novel chronicling the breakup of her marriage to investigative journalist Carl Bernstein (ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN) is adapted for the big screen by director Mike Nichols and solidly acted by Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Rachel Samstat (Streep) is Ephron's stand-in, a New York food writer who falls for and marries Washington political columnist Mark Forman (Nicholson) despite her initial misgivings. And it isn't long before a second pregnancy, separate homes, and the return of Mark's womanizing places a strain on the marriage that results in a bitter divorce and inspires Rachel's cynical musings on the nature of love, sex, and relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartburn-M.Streep and Jack Nicholson, 28 Dec 2004

Fantastic its on dvd now.I went to great lengths to purchase this film many years ago on video, now its on dvd thats great. This film should be up there with streep and Nicholsons greatest movies in my opinion.Instead this movie has been very overlooked. The story is very touching and many Women can relate to the part played by Meryl, having experianced similar situations themselves. The acting is superb. The backing songs from Carly Simon add to a great film.Do not miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE FILM IF EVER THERE WAS ONE!!!!, 21 Jan 2006
By C. Conn "tinaconn6" (Hampshire) - See all my reviews

Although the story is quite sad in parts the film is balanced out by a lot of humour. I found myself laughing out loud at this film a lot. It also made me cry.

This has to be one of the best films I have ever seen. I saw this film many years ago and remembered it but it took me a long while to find what the title was. All these years later I found that it was just as good as I remembered!

I feel that a lot of Hollywood movies are let down by the ending but not this one. It has a satisfying ending which I will not give away.

I don't know what more to say without giving away any of the story, so I will just say buy it. You won't be disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring!, 3 Jul 2007
Usually I like almost anything with Meryl Streep or Jack Nicholson in it. But I'm sorry, I fell asleep during this film, the plot was so tedious. On the bright side, if you suffer with insomnia, watch it in the bedroom.

This film is based on a somewhat autobiographical novel by Norah Ephron. The book is good, and so is the film. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Plot for a Film
Watch it to see some reasonable performances from the stars, but they can't save it from itself and the direction is appalling. Historical interest only.
