Takes a different approach to most books on this subject which, in the main, recommend cutting out fatty foods, onion, citrus, tomatoes, coffee etc. and not bending down or lying flat! Such a common problem that there are many weird and wonderful remedies out there! In short though, all suggestions to 'manage', rather than cure, the problem (in the process severely restricting your lifestyle) and which, in my case, made no difference at all.

This book suggests that heartburn/acid reflux may be caused by too many carbs (including good ones) which ferment in the intestine to create undue pressure on the stomach forcing the sphincter muscle to release acid/bile into the oseophagus in susceptible individuals. An interesting theory which makes a lot of sense in my view. My problem only started when I began regularly having porridge, bananas, home-made beany soups and all the usual healthy things which are currently recommended for a balanced diet.

I have cut back on carbs now for less than a week and the problem has nearly gone (back to eating onions, tomatoes, lemon juice, coffee). Definitely worth trying and much better than having to resort to medication/surgery if this can be avoided. Added bonus is that you will definitely lose weight reliably, another risk factor for this condition. Highly recommend the 'New High Protein Cookbook' by Dr Charles Clark for people who want to know more about the low-carb diet - his approach is more moderate, sensible and do-able than many others.

A very informative and intresting read. After years of gerd and on medication thanks to this book I am now off the medication and feeling alot better. Not healed yet but will be. Naturally. Not using the gps meds!

After going down all the wrong roads to cure my GERD, I found the low carb diet advocated dramatically decreased my symptoms and allowed me to stop my PPI medication in a week. Very helpful.

I endured near starvation for a week without improvement - not a good experience. Anything which makes you miserable is not going to help anything. I realised that I should have bought the author's other book ('Fast Tract' etc.) which gives more information especially fermentation tables etc. I prefer to have a printed book from a practical point of view but the printed version of the other book is very expensive. That said, the theory the author puts forward seems convincing. If the Fast Tract printed book became available at a reasonable price I would certainly buy it and give the system another try. Anyone looking for a practical and inspiring story encompassing the mind/body connection plus other relevant advice should google: Jim Notto 'The gerd has met its match and the match is you'.

Although the diet wasn't new information to me - low carb - there was interesting info on the standard medications that I was prescribed which has now led me to be meds free and have an improved reflux - my doctor was surprised but supportive. I now only take natural foods to tame the acid understand a whole lot more why I can have flare ups.
I haven't given 5 stars for the simple fact this book didn't put a fire in my belly and motivate me enough to do all the changes suggested - yes you can put that down to my and personal failings, but I expected just a little more 'go get it' push from the author.
I would recommend this book you will learn something.
