Often translations of books make awkward reading. This book does not. Juan Carlos lives life on the understanding that he will die. The book is centred around the impact of this carefree young man on the women his charisma seduces, and the friends he inspires, and yet it is personal. It is personal due to the fact that at heart, it is a book about the ordinary lives of those who live in a small town in the province of Buenos Aires. Whilst the location gives it a certain authenticity, its central themes are not culturally limted. On the surface the town is a sedate backwater, but scratch a little beneath it, and it reveals a town riven by petty jealousies, malicious gossip and social ambition. A parallell theme in the book is love and loyalty. An intriguing story, ingeniously written - this is a book to read and recommend to others.
