Reviews

Clint Eastwood takes a revisionist approach to his tough-guy persona once again in HEARTBREAK RIDGE. As he had done in TIGHTROPE and PALE RIDER, and as he would do even more memorably in UNFORGIVEN, Eastwood probes beneath the surface of his prototypical character, a man who feels most at ease amid violence. HEARTBREAK RIDGE is a deft blend of service comedy, action film, and, most surprisingly, a genuine adult love story, as Sergeant Highway tries, with touching earnestness, to win back the affections of his ex-wife (Marsha Mason), after his devotion to the corps has kept them apart for too many lonely years. Meanwhile, he has to whip his inexperienced, undisciplined troops into shape.

Clint Eastwood's best film EVER. Gunny Highway ( Clint Eastwood ) plays a war relic in this army farce . He becomes platoon leader of marine squadron 2 with hillarious concequences at first they detest him and want rid of him but and i quote the reply "Dream on ........ ". The story and film itself is'nt funny it's clint's lines that make this movie pure class - " I eat concertina wire and piss napalm and can can fire a round through a fleas ass from 200 metres " . So buy this film now.

When I first watched this film I fell in love with it. It's similar in plot and storyline to films such as Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and Officer and a Gentleman... However it's kind've given a slightly comical edge.
Clint is a majorally experienced Sergeant in the Marines and is busy getting himself into a lot of trouble when he gets transferred home.
There he is given a platoon of down and outers who have joined the Army cos they've got nothing better to do. The first half of the film details how Clint/Sergeant Gunny Highway trains these down and outers into an E-lite fighting force... The second half of the film, in similar fashion to films of this ilk, is all about the war in Grenada.
All I can say is if you've not seen it on TV before then buy it now. A brilliant film and a bargain at this price.

I grew up on Eastwood movies from his Cowboy era to Dirty Harry and beyond. I have to say this movie is as good in its way as any of the previous.
The story has been told many times over of a rough tough unconventional leader shaping up a rag tag misfit group into a cohesive force to be reckoned with. Many times using unconventional or vary conventional ways. Not only in the military field but also many other fields. So it is more the delivery than the story that one would want to watch this movie for.
Marine sergeant (Clint Eastwood) facing retirement and trying to cope with a failed marriage and ex wife is tasked with turning a rag tag bunch of individuals into marines. He is hampered by self glorification self credit seeking people on all sides. If he fails many will die. So will he succeed and if so at what cost?

First off, please don't buy this film if you are expecting 'Full Metal Jacket', 'Boys In Company C' or 'Tigerland', this movie does not take itself seriously and neither should it's audience. It's not focusing on the way 'real' marine recon units act, it's a light hearted, more comical approach.

The comical essence and timing of the film is superb and Clint Eastwood plays one of his best roles ever as gunnery sergeant Thomas Highway (yes, even compared to Dirty Harry Callahan and Blondie), he's an ever more macho Philo Beddoe from 'Any Which Way You Can' in my opinion.

OK, the story line has been done many times before, but, instead of wanting the inadequate soldiers to achieve their goals, as you do in most films of this kind, you find yourself rooting for their Platoon Leader, Highway, because he is such a likeable character.

The first hour and half of this film is great for what it was trying to achieve, mainly due to Eastwood's character, but, for me, the last 30 minutes, from the moment the attack on Grenada is initiated, it all gets a bit A-Team. OK, I know this film is a bit of fun, and, like I say it doesn't take itself seriously, but, bullets hitting the ground behind the soldiers as they run, and hot-wired JCB's in a combat zone become a little too much for me, especially as they are using the actual conflict in Grenada, I feel they should, or could, have crated a false war to compliment the rest of the film. However, had this film ended before the attack on Grenada, I would have given it, four, or possibly the full 'five stars'.

Worth every penny for Clint Eastwood alone.

Truly one of the best Clint Eastwood movies of all time.

The blu-ray itself is good :D with the scenes on the outer side :D looking very stunning.

The blu-ray does have the occasional bit of grain in the more darker scenes, but not complaining.

A true great movie, which has been transformed to superb great HD.

Clint Eastwood plays a combat vet in the USMC who despite having served for more than 20 years is only a gunnery sergeant. Having harranged his CO's staff for a transfer, he gets back to his old unit (Recon) to find they are less than well motivated. A shedload of one-liners and procedure circumventions later, they are pretty good even by american standards (Only joking! ) So there are some historical inaccuracies - The Rangers went into Grenada in '82, not the USMC - but on the whole it's a damn good film. Be warned - watch it too often, and you'll end up quoting it!

This review is about the PRODUCT, and not the FILM.

For a film of this age (1986), the HD-transfer is about as good as you could have expected. The first thing that jumped out at me was the amount of bad language which has been restored in this version, which was modified for the DVD. In general, the Blu-ray print is definitely an improvement over the DVD in picture quality, surprisingly good at times, but with only a 3 minute trailer included as an extra, it feels like exploitation and a waste of disc space. I think 3* is a fair assessment of the product given the lack of extras, but it is probably worth upgrading your DVD to get it.
