Time has been kind to Bert Jansch "Heartbreak". When it was released in the early 80s, I thought it was a bit overproduced and slick. It has now been lovingly remastered and I have to admit that it is a forgotten gem (with a few fillers). The running order is not the same as the orginal UK album, but according to the staff at Omnivore, the original producers (who were involved in the reissue project) insisted on current order. After a few listenings I can understand why. The album have got a better flow. The bonus disc consists of a very good solo performance, recorded while Jansch was in California. A fine tribute to a truley unique artist.

Bert Jansch is probably best remembered for his albums of the 1960s and 70s but actually his albums in the 1980s were of high quality too. They didn’t break new ground, true. But they do have excellent standards.
This fourteenth album from 1982 is a fine example. In some ways this album is just a nice little album that keeps things chugging along but it does have some great moments.
On the recording there is Albert Lee helping out on guitar and mandolin, Randy Tico on Bass, Matt Betton on drums, and Jack Kelly on drums. There is also vocals on one track from Jennifer Warnes. The all help Bert to create a good album of soft folk rock.

This is a good album and there are some good points. One stand out track is Bert’s version of the Elvis Presley Hit Heartbreak Hotel. It is a surprisingly brilliant re working of the song and sounds great.
Also of interest is a new version of If I were a Carpenter that is just excellent.
There are really interesting versions of two traditional pieces. Wild mountain thyme is superb and the other traditional piece is blackwaterside and this is a really inspiring version here.
There are some fabulous songs by Jansch and all together the album is definitely one to collect.

The 2012 re master deluxe edition offers up a second disc that makes it worth getting this album since the second disc contains a live performance at McCabe’s Guitar Shop. This is a brilliant live set and a great bonus disc.

This album has a quaint charm about it that shows Bert willing to experiment while his own muse had dried up a bit. Heartbreak Hotel is a bit lame, but the rest of the album is a lot more than pleasant, and an important return to vocal work after the fine instrumental Avocet. Although Bert's guitar conveys a depth that most singers could never match, Bert's singing is almost as essential. Although the record breaks no new ground, in the context of his career it is a nice album. Most importantly, Bert sounds happy. I really enjoy listening to it a couple of times every year.
