By series 3, Heartbeat had moved to primetime Sunday night ITV and was bringing in massive ratings. Consequently, this series has a real sense of confidence in what it's doing, and also an evidently bigger budget; one episode, "Riders of the Storm" features a massive train crash in a blizzard amongst several other interwoven storylines. Big things for what was originally a low-scale rural drama, and it occassionally feels like it has slightly over-reached itself, perhaps losing some of the charm of the earlier series.
That's not to criticise it, the series has broadened its sweep, and there are a few excellent episodes, particularly "Going Home", with a good turn by Clive Swift as a Holocaust survivor looking to trace the SS Officer who betrayed him. There's also an early screen appearance by a "doesn't he look young?" Daniel Craig to look out for in one episode.
There are also a few new arrivals and departures. The decline of Dr Ferrenby is well handled across several episodes, and we also see a few faces who would return in later series. Kate's aunt would be a welcome later addition to the cast, but the first appearance of the irritating "comic stupid character" David Stockwell, less so. It's just a shame that many of the one-off characters we're introduced to in some episodes are never seen or heard of again, despite apparently having been well-known to the other characters.
Onto the DVD, another solid Network release; original 4:3 aspect ratio, stereo sound, no subtitles (unfortunately), ad break cards left intact and easy-to-use menus. Episodes are again uncut except for songs by The Beatles, which are dubbed by rather over-loud covers. There are also no extra features on this release, sadly.
I notice some comments on previous series criticise the picture quality; it's not amazing, but bear in mind that this is a 4:3 video-based standard definition TV series from the early 1990s, so to expect a modern widescreen TV to make it look HD is perhaps asking a bit too much.
Overall, a good solid release of a good solid series.
