Reviews

Set during the 1960s in the fictional North Yorkshire village of Aidensfield and initially starring former EastEnder Nick Berry as PC Nick Rowan, this enduringly popular series interweaves crime and medical storylines, with a host of colourful characters that viewers took to their hearts and a wonderfully nostalgic soundtrack. Running for two successful decades and becoming staple Sunday-night viewing, Heartbeat won several prestigious TV awards including Best Performing Peak-Time Drama in 1999 (beating Coronation Street), and a number of ITV Programme of the Year awards. The series attracted a peak audience of 14 million, spawned a highly successful spin-off, The Royal, and a Top Ten hit single, and has garnered a devoted following, remaining prime-time viewing world-wide. In this complete fifth series the love story between Nick and Kate ends in tragedy, and a dark cloud of shock and grief gathers over Nick as he is forced to move into a new and traumatising chapter in his life.

I am not a television fan in any way, bought this for my lady, she persuaded me to watch with her as I`m an old rock and roller, never saw the originals as I worked abroad for many years, but hey man, it is spot on, good production, I enjoyed every minute, I`m a fan now, will buy more.

We see a number of changes in Heartbeat – Series 5. First off we see Kate sadly pass away and I have to admit, I cry my eyes out each time I watch this series. We also see Maggie Bolton come into the show, who I totally love.

Ruby Rowan (Nick's mum) comes to stay with him for a few episodes. We meet Bernie Scripps for the first time & right at the very end of the series we welcome Jo Weston for the first time too.

Series 5 was to prove to be a landmark series for this drama. The most important thing to happen was the departure of Niamh Cusack as the adorable Kate Rowan. In episode 3 she loses her battle with leukaemia, shortly after giving birth to her daughter Katie. Anyone who isn't brought to tears by this story must be made of stone! This series also saw the introduction of District Nurse Maggie Bolton, played by Kazia Pelka, who in some ways was a replacement for the doctor character, and a charming one at that! In the final episode we have our first glimpse of the future Mrs Rowan, schoolteacher Jo Weston played by Juliette Gruber. She was never good enough to replace Kate, but was very likeable all the same. At this point this series was still very much up there with the best of dramas. The full episode listing for this series is:
1. Wishing Well
2. Expectations
3. Thief In The Night
4. Domestic
5. Vacant Possession
6. We're All Allies Really
7. Sophies Choice

I now have this and the rest of the seies up to 13. Again good TV (early series the best) It started to go down when YTV saw this as a cash cow rather than entertainment when Greengrass went and Peggy Armstrong, PC Younger and other unconvincing characters appeared.

I was a follower of this series in the past and still enjoy the stories and the acting - not to mention the wonderful personalities who used to pop into the series from time to time. a real family programme with no announcements at the start warning about bad language and sexual scenes. It is difficult to find a series on tv now that does not include the strong language etc which is . totally unnecessary in my opinion and it does not add to the programmes in any way - in fact just the opposite. I also like the 60s music that is playing in the background sometimes. Colourful characters in a great series and now on dvd.. -

Was a bit surprised to see Nurse Maggie come into the series right at beginning of series 5 without any sort of easing slowly, did producers of the dvd series miss an episode somewhere between last episode on Ser 4 and beginning of Ser 5 as first episode sees Maggie already familiar with Nick & Kate Rowan. Got a bit confused thinking maybe the episodes got mixed up. This series just gets better. Missed a lot of series while it was showing and now delighted to be collecting it on DVD but think I'll stop when Nick Rowan leaves for Canada as I'm not familiar with the 'after Rowan' programmes.

Fantastic set of dvd's, some real heartbreaking scenes and storylines as we say goodbye to Kate Rowan, and we also see the shoots of recovery for Nick.

Any fan of Heartbeat should grab the chance to watch this.
